What's with the change of style of the gear-sets there? Looks like they're working in 20th century combat gear design into it and easing-up on the hyper-fantasy stuff (I guess they've got that style kinda covered for now).

Reminds me of this a bit:

As for XIV:ARR content and end-game... it was fine the first time I beat it. I didn't feel the need to repeat the content to try and get the various RNGs to align so I got stuff with very marginal ilvl increases.

It's a critique I'd level at almost all the XIV content - Trials, dungeons, FATES, levels, hests... It was fun the first time I completed it. The game mechanics aren't varied or complex enough to make it fun on repetition. That's why the devs bust out the Skinner-box for that.

The end-game consists of repeating the same solved (and unchanging) challenges over and over again in the hopes you get a RNG drop or you earn enough points to get something. It's a cheap tactic to get people to re-play something that isn't fun after the first pass.

If the combat itself were deeper and less predictable there might be some value (ie. a different game-play experience) to be had when repeating content - but it isn't so it doesn't.

Over the years some games have tried to solve the replay-ability thing with procedurally generated dungeons or maps and while it has some value it also has problems too (Like seeing the same set-pieces over and over in the oblivion parts of Oblivion).

The solution should have come from the combat.
Even FFVII let you build your characters and party differently so that there was experimentation and replay value. Many RPGs let you do this successfully to some degree.

I like collecting loot in RPGs - but the stark reality is that the XIV gear system is just a peanut being offered to keep you grinding so they can get your sub fee. If you've been in a casino and seen people waste their lives and wealth to slot-machines you'll know this tactic works.

I could almost play XIV just for the quality of its real-time artwork...

    Think of it like this:
What would happen if you grey-boxed a bunch of popular games, from overwatch to doom - that is, stripped out all the music and advanced sound and replaced the artwork of the world/levels with grey untextured primitives and the characters with simple untextured place-holders?

You'd be left with a stark focus on the game-play these games offered without the cushion of the artwork or IP to act as crutches. Some of them would still be playable and offer a measure of enjoyment. Chances are that the ones that are most playable in this state would be games that were great successes.

How would XIV fare in this state? If the loot didn't make you look prettier or your combos didn't make you do cinematic back-flips? Would the core mechanics of the game still appeal? I'd argue it would become hard to pick XIV out from a sea of generic MMOs and people would drop their controller long before people playing through a stripped out Diablo, Half-Life or side-scroller.

(I'm aware aesthetics are very much part of many games' core appeal and if done right are woven directly into the game-play - but this is just to drill down to the game mechanics which are XIV's problem.)

If you have friends that play it I can see why it might be a thing, at least it's less rage-inducing than League - but there are many other games out there without fees you could play with your buddies.

Demon looks like it's going to be an A9 simulator, he looks stuck in the middle with no way to get out.

Training dummy that hits back, yay.

I can't get over how jarring the low texture quality is on his cloak or how the sword looks like it's made of plastic.

He may break out, but then again, people still consider Sophia Ex too hard even after SE made it doable damn near blindfolded for a "high level ex primal." Considering the vast difference between Normal ("story") mode and ex Sophia in terms of battlefield, maybe he'll just be sitting in his binding for normal/story and fully go wild in ex, since they clearly designed his whole body and what not so I don't think they'd....

Well actually nevermind, I just remembered T11 in Final coil and all that extra wasted space.

Considering the chains are animated and they have a picture of him 'exploding' the place behind him I assume phase 3 will involve his breaking free and then the real fight begins.

Sort of how Sophia Ex's phase 1 lasts 20% of her HP and is basically filler/mechanic introduction (Unlike Sephirot)

also that firebird mount, eh. it's cool and all but not really to my liking, which is probably a good thing as now I can put off lanner collecting until 4.0 or later.

Yeah not surprising considering Uematsu said all of 1.0's tracks were basically inspired by his past work, that's Thanalan's Battle theme from 1.0, Quicksand.

Hm...so of the original battle themes from 1.0 that they could potentially reuse for next HM/Garlean shiz, either:

    or

(though I forget if this was reused..been awhile.)
