I'm gonna let one of you guys get far into the game and then confirm for me that the stories do actually align at some point before I dive into this. Let me know!
They probably don't. There's some evidence of there being a larger plot behind-the-scenes, but the individual character stories won't overlap. We know that's the structure of the game, at least through Chapter 4, which is as far as we know the final chapter(s). There're conflicting reports on there being more story if you finish all eight stories, but wouldn't count on it. Most of the game's stories will be their personal stories.
If each story is compelling on its own, and the characters form solid relationships through dialogue outside of their personal quests (which we've seen videos of), does it matter? Anthologies aren't any less capable of being well-written, and they're pretty rare in gaming.
Have you tried out the demo? Primrose's prologue alone was better to me dramatically than FFXV. lol
8 separate anthologies just isn't what drew me to the game. Was hoping for something like Suikoden 3.
Even if the eight stories do eventually intertwine into one, it’d be so jarring and out of place due to the lack of previous interactions one would have to question the technique used here and would the ensemble story even be any good because of it.
EDIT: came off as triggered. not my intent

So it seems the “optimal” way to experience everything is: Create party of 4, plow through those 4 characters chapter X, use the other characters in another party, plow through their chapter X, rinse-repeat for X+1 (maybe reshuffling party)
Do the paths ever converge into one ultimate chapter, or is is really basically distinct storylines the whole way through?

Not sure if there’s some sort of bonus once you’ve beaten all eight (I’ve only finished four so far - mopping up the rest today), but they are all entirely standalone stories.
I dono why shit like this is being posted now, who cares, enjoy the damn game and discover this for yourself! Have fun dammit! This is old school goodness.
I'd recommend just trying the demo and seeing if it appeals to you. Doesn't seem as though there's any hidden chapter after the characters' personal stories, although there is an enormous amount of optional content.
It's basically an open world turn-based JRPG with eight individualized stories.

:blobthink:Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game with one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard. The combat system rocks and will hopefully be used in more Square Enix games to come. There are plenty of good ideas in here. But the game is too grindy, too repetitive, too full of structural problems to be viewed as much more than another botched JRPG experiment.
sounds terrible, thanks for providing them with helpful feedback during the beta guys instead of fawning over a dumpsterfire
