Makes sense, but MOBO still refuses to recognize my HDDs. So I have nowhere to install lol.

I suppose I can boot to Windows from my DVD drive and install the MOBO drivers. Would that help you think?

I really wish I had another PC setup so I could know for sure if the HDDs are just dead. Stranger things have happened.

That's exactly what you need to do.

    Read the link I posted.

BUT there is another process that may work for you. When you FIRST start up the system with the new mobo installed, you should have your original Windows Install CD in the optical drive. You should use the right key during the initial boot to go into BIOS Setup right away. Check that everything looks OK, but make SURE you go set the Boot Priority Sequence this way: try the optical drive first, THEN the HDD. SAVE and EXIT and the machine will boot from the Install CD, not from the HDD. Do NOT do a normal Install. Look for the option to do a process called REPAIR INSTALL or something like it. This will try to re-do the process of customizing the device drivers. It will survey the hardware present and compare that to the device drivers already installed on the HDD. It will try to remove unneeded ones and add new ones that are needed for the new mobo. When it is finished, if it works properly, your machine should be able to boot and run normally from your OLD HDD, with all your apps and data intact! That is what you want, of course.
That's the part I'm referring to. I had to do this when I reinstalled windows on a new SSD for similar reasons.

Oh God that makes so much sense. I'll try that tonight. Fingers crossed, I will report back.

Just be patient with it. It will probably take one or two tries to get it perfect. Make sure to set your boot priority the right way.

    ALSO:

If your mobo came with an install disc. Try running that first as it will likely have more updated drivers and settings.

How do I run the install disc? I wanted to try that actually, but couldn't figure out how to do it from bios. Do I run Windows on the DVD drive, then run the install disc from there?

Plug in DVD drive and SSD. Goto boot menu. Pick DVD drive for boot. Insert install disc. Run repair install on SSD.

Awesome, thanks for all your advice. My only real problem here was forgetting the golden rule of building a PC: frustration is the norm, keep at it.

Son of a bitch, I think we have a winner. Hooked up old MOBO after nothing else worked. Guess what? That one doesn't recognize either of my two HDDs. And I used the same cord + port with my DVD drive, so I know that's not the problem.

The one HDD, probably died when the power issues shorted it.
    Second HDD, DOA.

Gonna buy a third cheap HDD ASAP and test it, but if two MOBOs can't recognize either HDD (even on the BIOS level), and one of those MOBOs I know has worked fine previously - I probably have two dead HDDs, yes?

Then why would it work with my DVD drive?

Listen, none of this makes any sense to me either but it's all possible.

Haha fair enough. I bought the second HDD at Microcenter, I'm going to take it in this weekend and see if they can help troubleshoot.

At least I'm moving forward, figuring shit out. I swear if it's really as simple as two dead HDDs I'm gonna die laughing

brought both HDDs to work, tech guy checked them out - both dead. I'm happy because that was by far the least annoying of the possibilities, and I can just go get another cheap one this weekend. or maybe two because I'm fucking paranoid at this point lol

Snap crackle pop. What smells like burnt popcorn?

Buying a pre-built rig. Lesson learned!

    Huh?

    What'd you fuck up?

Building a PC is stupidly easy.
