new setup not detecting DVD or HDD drives

    In a nutshell:

    - Install new PSU/mobo in a new case
    - Nothing turns on; cpu fan starts briefly (runs for a fraction of a second before stopping)
    - remove all devices, computer boots fine (to bios of course)
    - connect SDD, computer boots to windows (! yay)
    - but now it won't recognize either my HDD or my DVD drive. As in, the BIOS won't recognize them, period.

I've tried different cables and different ports. I've tried using the same cable and port that work for the SDD. Nothing. Now the easy answer is that they both got fried due to the power issues I was experiencing early on, but... that just seems odd. It wasn't like there was a power surge or anything.

Is there anything else I can try? I'm going to fool around in the BIOS tonight but I don't have much hope that will help.

Also, I've heard of HDDs getting fried, but how could the DVD drive get fried too, and both at the same time, but not the SDD?

Does the HDD make any sounds?

Also, does the BIOS recognize that the HDD is hooked up at all when you have both SSD and HDD hooked up?

It doesn't recognize it period, whether it's on its own or in tandem with another drive.

It's fried. Sorry dude. Sounds like the power problems killed it as you said.

bah. I figured. 1TB HDD and DVD drive; not too expensive to replace, but still sucks. no data of particular value on that HDD at least.

    thanks anyway :/

worst part will be downloading FFXIV again in its entirety... ick

Better to have it on the SSD anyway. Much faster loading.

yeah I was honestly surprised when I booted up with the SDD (which has always been my boot drive, thankfully) and FFXIV wasn't on there. I have no idea what I was thinking, installing it on the HDD. saving space I guess, but really...

If you had an external adapter you could further diagnose the drives, though you could also just do the same things with the case open. Hook up power only (no sata/pata cable): listen to the drive as it receives power; it's a lost cause if the drive clicks softly a couple times and turns off on its own (for spinning disk drives, ssd is either on or dead).

Can do something similar with dvd drives in that giving it power can let you open the tray, put in a cd, and hear it spin up (you can always use the emergency eject hole with a bent paper clip if tray gets stuck). If power does little or nothing (no light, no drive motor sound, etc), well you know.

Woke up this morning, SSD drive is no longer recognized as a valid boot drive (though the bios still sees it). So somehow between shutting down last night and waking up this morning that just... happened.

Worked fine last night, can't boot this morning.

I am in full-on murder mode right now.

Make sure it's connected to the right port.

    Reseat it.

    Oh it is. Believe me.

That drive died once before though. That was the start of me building a new rig in the first place. So looking back I'm not shocked.

Here is my plan. What do you think?

Pick up new DVD drive and cheap SSD today. Reinstall Windows. If the problem was the drive, that fixes things. If the MOBO was the problem, it may fry the second drive too. In that case, replace MOBO. Contact Gigabyte, see what compensation (if any) they will offer for my troubles.

Buy a cheap HDD... Why would you waste the money on an SSD.

    Hmm good point

$13 HDD, $15 DVD. Thank you Microcenter. Plan now is to hook up the DVD, install Windows, and run that on my cheap HDD for a couple weeks minimum, maybe a bit longer. If everything remains solid I'll invest in better storage. If not... Well I'm not even going to think about that right now.

Won't recognize the second HDD, but it does recognize the DVD drive. Hmm. I'm no optimist but the odds of two dead HDDs... Seems unlikely.

I have the DVD that came with the MOBO. Is it possible I just need to update the bios or drivers somehow? Or is this MOBO just shit?

I could take my old MOBO and hook that back up, see if it can recognize the HDDs. Might be worth checking into.

Did you install windows via BIOS or was it already installed

Windows was already installed on my SSD. But that SSD is dead now. The only working drive I own that my MOBO will recognize is the DVD drive at this point.

HDDs, either they are both dead or the MOBO won't recognize them. So tonight I have the pleasure of taking apart the new rig and plugging the old MOBO back together just to check the HDDs. Joy!

You need to install windows again.
