I don't think it was me. Machine ran fine on its side. Screw in MOBO, turn it on and something popped. Now my drives are dead again - for the second time - and I'm suspicious as to why.

I would bet it was you.
Probably, but at this point I'm too busted to give a fuck. I officially give up!
Sometimes you just need to cut your losses. Could have been any number of things, like forgetting the mobo screw standoffs, not plugging in all the cables necessary from the psu, forcing plugs into the wrong slots, a fucked up psu (this happens most often if nothing else), or somehow having a loose piece of exposed cabling or some other metal contact in there.

Look for ones that include stuff like nvidia 1060, 1070, 1080, amd 470, 480, and intel i5/i7 skylake (6000 series) or kabylake (7000 series) for mid-high range systems. Can sometimes find interesting discounts through cyberpower and ibuypower prebuilts (you chose from big lists of off-the-shelf parts, they build it and ship it to you).
This one is exceedingly common among the first time builders I know. Most things you aren't supposed to connect to each other just won't fit but a motherboard can screw directly into a case just fine. It may bend a little, and the slots won't all line up, but you can definitely get far enough in a build to turn on the power and fry a Mobo.
Edit: nevermind, I saw your reply in my other thread. I think I'll stick with that one, then. I'll keep the parts though, and who knows, maybe I can figure something out. My big mistake was cannibalizing the old rig to build the new. Too much stress when it didn't work and I'm relying completely on the new one.
And yeah the fact that it worked fine until I actually screwed the MOBO in... That says to me something was connected in a place it shouldn't be.
