It says the WikiLeaks founder, currently in custody in London, damaged national security by publishing documents that harmed the U.S. and its allies and aided its adversaries.

The case comes amid a Justice Department crackdown on national security leaks and raised immediate fear among news media advocates that Assange's actions — including soliciting and publishing classified information — are indistinguishable from what traditional journalists do on a daily basis. Those same concerns led the Obama administration Justice Department to balk at bringing charges for similar conduct.

Sweden has dropped the re-investigation into rape charges against Julian Assange.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Eva-Marie Persson took the decision to "discontinue the investigation regarding Julian Assange", the Swedish Prosecution Authority said.

"The reason for this decision is that the evidence has weakened considerably due to the long period of time that has elapsed since the events in question," it added.

Ms Persson said: "I would like to emphasise that the injured party has submitted a credible and reliable version of events.

"Her statements have been coherent, extensive and detailed; however, my overall assessment is that the evidential situation has been weakened to such an extent that that there is no longer any reason to continue the investigation."

Separately, the prosecutors held a news briefing in the Swedish capital Stockholm, saying that the decision to drop the inquiry had been taken after interviews with seven witnesses in the case.

In June the UK formally approved an extradition request from the US, but since the UK Home Secretary position changed in July, it hasn't moved forward.

Candice, there is a popular theory on the right that emails weren't hacked but leaked to wikileaks by a disgruntled employee who was upset at DNC for rigging primaries against Bernie. This DNC staffer was shot in a "mugging" a few days later and the mugger forgot to rob him.

edit: the source of this is wikileaks itself, which ever denied having received the emails from russian hackers but rather said the source was from the inside.

Pence actually did the same thing as Hillary by hosting his emails on a private server during his time as governor and those were hacked, but not leaked to wikileaks. Wikileaks and Assange have shown conservative bias in the past. So it's fair to say you won't find much Republican data on the website.

It depends who is doing the stealing of intel I guess. Spys keep it for their own designs, whistleblowers/leakers give it to news companies.
