It's that time of the year again where you should probably start doing your taxes very soon; People who file by the end of Jan usually get their returns within a couple of weeks, and if you wait much longer (mid march), you're looking at a month plus.
Short of a friendly reminder, this also comes with a suggestion: Do it yourself! Even if you have a lot of weird tax things going on, most of the online services will walk you through it.
One season, many years ago I got pissed at a CPA charging me FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS to do my taxes, and since then i've been doing them my own. It takes a few hours the first time, but once you know what you're doing it can really be done in 30 to 60 minutes (assuming you keep all of your tax related documents in one place, otherwise you'll be digging for them.. but you have to do this regardless).
One change I made this year was switching AWAY from TurboTax. It seems they've been charging even more this year, and nickle and diming at every turn. You now have to pay to itemize, charge you extra if you have an HSA, and overcharge on state returns.
In short, do your taxes yourself, and use https://www.freetaxusa.com - I switched to them this year and they are much much better than anything else out there, and only charge 12.95 in total.
So, how much are people owing or getting back? An extra 2.5k in my pocket this year.
