Not really sure how much I buying this atm but it is possible (and I want to believe):

    http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-launch...-amd-response/
(pretty much a highlights reel from the AMD AMA on reddit)

    Rough summary:

    - Games are optimised for the Intel CPUs, will get better
    - Changes at higher resolutions (well, duh, GPU becomes bottleneck)
    - Work in progress, about 300 game devs. onboard.
    - Problems with the windows scheduler and SMT
    - buggy MBs

Will get better in the coming months when quirks are worked out (not that unusual, early Intel HT was a nightmare if I recall), but roughly
    "Please look forwards to it"

I'm picturing the shopped Miami Dolphins "just wait" skeleton. But seriously, I hope AMD gets it ironed out and minimizes the issues.

I think it's realistic that in 8-10 months there could a 10-15% increase in performance, but that's certainly not a given. Previous chipsets (both Intel and AMD) usually take a while to iron out the details and become more mature.

Article from Arstechnica about the Intel vs. AMD Ryzen on gaming, relatively interesting read

Ashes of the Singularity released a patch with Ryzen optimizations. Apparently at 1080p it shows a 17-31% performance increase. PCPer is talking about it on the podcast right now.

Feel free to name me anywhere between 1 and 5 things that a non-commercial consumer will need a 16 core hyperthreaded CPU for.

Yeah that's what they said about 4 core CPUs too and barely anything even uses those properly yet, particularly in the consumer market. The most you might see is some gains in XSplit/Vegas/Premier for streaming/encoding, but I'd estimate that 9.5 out of 10 users will never make any use out of that many cores and threads.

AMD hasn't been very competitive since quad cores have been around, but now they are. That will force innovation beyond quad-cores, which is where consumers have been stuck for a long time.

Nothing is going to force the entire software industry to update their platforms to support that many cores.

Maybe not, but there WILL be innovation. Maybe Intel's next CPU or the one after that will have more than a 5% performance increase and the ability to watch 4k video on Netflix. CPU development has stagnated bigtime with only one real player in the market, I think we can both agree on that.

Most of what I read isn't that anyone expects a single program to make full use of that, but want to be able to do gaming/streaming/downloading/VMs/plex all at the same time. Pretty sure small-scale production houses and freelance video folks will jump on something like this too. It won't be super mainstream, but it will (I think) find a market segment.

Yeah no doubt, but I think targeting the consumer market with something like this instead of pushing for more mainstream cooperation with software/engine developers to support quadcore/8 thread hyper threading (which is a larger market share and more useful to more people) would be a better use of time for now. You can already pick up CPUs with a million cores for less than $600 these days which, if you're using the CPU as part of your business, is not a heavy investment whatsoever.

AMD announced the Ryzen 5 series to be released in April 11th.
4 models coming, all with SMT and 4-6 cores.

    Ryzen 5 1600X, 6 cores, 3,6GHz clock, 4,0GHz boost, 100MHz XFR, 16MByte L3 Cache, 95W TDP, ~275€
    Ryzen 5 1600,_ 6 cores, 3,2GHz clock, 3,6GHz boost, 100MHz XFR, 16MByte L3 Cache, 65W TDP, ~240€
    Ryzen 5 1500X, 4 cores, 3,5GHz clock, 3,7GHz boost, 200MHz XFR, 16MByte L3 Cache, 65W TDP, ~210€
    Ryzen 5 1400,_ 4 cores, 3,2GHz clock, 3,4GHz boost,_ 50MHz XFR,_ 8MByte L3 Cache, 65W TDP, ~190€

$ prices will probably be about 10-20% lower.

    tldr;

Ryzen really really likes fast memory, it's still not 7700k fast in gaming, but it does a fair number in several usage scenarios.
