Is a 4K monitor worth it?

I'm buying a new computer (aiming to spend between $1800and $2500) and considered buying a 4K monitor. However, I'm not sure whether a 4K monitor is worth it right now. I was thinking it might be better to downgrade in the monitor department and perhaps spend a bit extra on the computer instead?

Anyone use a 4K monitor that care to weigh in?

Anyone else have a 4K monitor?

I use a 32" 4k monitor (BenQ, https://www.komplett.se/product/8331...k-led-bl3201pt ) at home and a 43" 4k (Dell, https://www.komplett.se/product/8931...-4k-led-p4317q ) monitor at work. Personally I would never go back, but you do need the gpu power to actually use it.

It really depends on what you want to use it for, I work as a IT-manager, so having a LOT of stuff up at the same time on a big screen is really really nice, and I mostly play FFXIV and TBS/RTS games, so the FPS aspect isn't that big of a deal.

They are pretty expensive though, so unless you have practical need for it, I would probably go with 2560x1440 or something instead, you'll get a lot for your money in the other hardware departments and still get a very sweet screen.

All that said, as I said above, I love it and I will never go back!

In my opinion ultrawide is better than 4k for most people.

I don't use my 4k monitor that much, my 144hz monitor gets more use.

I'd use it almost exclusively for gaming.

    My tldr is:

    1080p/144hz - FPS gamer on a budget.
1440p/144hz - FPS gamer not on a budget
Ultrawide - For everyone that isn't a hardcore FPS fan.
    Ultrawide/144hz - Super awesome.
4k/60 - Hope you're on a 32-40" screen and don't play any fast games, or you made a mistake.

Thank you, I'm leaning more towards an ultra wide 144hz monitor at the moment, at least until 4K screens become better. From what I've heard, some games result in UI portions of games to become so small that they're almost impossible to read. I'm not sure how common that is though, but it would kind of defeat the purpose of a 4K monitor for gaming.

The main purpose of my machine is gaming but I'm not competitive or anything. I own an AMH 399U 40" 4k. While I do like it, I wish I went with a 32" Ultrawide 1440p instead.

Same Boat. I'm only happy with my 4k when I'm watching some tech videos on youtube. The crispiness is real but sadly, you rarely get to benefit from it.

Well, to be fair, I was contemplating getting a 1080 or two anyway.

I really dislike UW monitors. They don't fit my needs for work or gaming.

Completely agree, I hate UW monitors. For any benefits it might bring you get to deal with the fact what you really want it for (videos and games) have a high chance of not supporting the resolution.

We use a few 3440x1440 (I think it was) in the accounting department, some web solutions make the screen go black I never got around to tracking down precisely what it is (and the companies providing those solutions refuse to help beyond "we're familiar with it, please don't use that hardware with our solutions". We don't use them much, so we just change resolution when we need to.

If you game a lot (and FPS is in the mix) the 1440p with 144 and a brutal GPU is probably your best bet if you can fit it into the budget. wait a little and see what the may announcements bring from Intel though, I'm not sure they're taking AMD seriously or not, but we should know at the first half of june if they do. Might change their pricing structure.

My notebook has a 4K screen, but honestly I think the real upside is on larger (32"+) monitors. I do enjoy having more screen real estate, and clearer pictures. It sure makes it easy on my tired-ass eyes.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh there's like no games that don't support ultrawide so lets change that to a very low chance.

I can come up with half of one off the top of my head.

    This for the most part.

You say you'll game - what games? FPS? 144hz. Everything else? Ultrawide/4k.

Well here's an easy one - every fighting game that's ever been made and will ever be made
