First two producer names own the movie rights. They weren't willing to throw gobs of money to del Toro for a 3rd film, so this is the cheaper alternative.

were the first two hellboys a financial success? Seems like a hell of a gamble with a lesser known director. Good for Harbour though. That guy is in like every movie ever as a great supporting character and now Stranger Things has made him a star and im siked.

They both made money probably(not sure of marketing costs and such), but if you don't get 300% of you budget, Hollywood considers it a failure.

They weren't, which is kinda the point. Ron Perlman and creepy Del Toro shit were the only redeeming factors. With both of those gone I just can't see how anyone could care.

That does make sense though. If you can make 300% of your budget why spend the same amount of effort to make half that?

It's actually to offset loses. Most movies don't even break even, so you need the blockbusters to really sell well. That is why Sony had such a rough go of it and really needed Spider-Man: Homecoming to do well, so they partnered with Marvel.

But it's that too, not instead of. Unless a studio has a bunch of people not working on anything they're always going to be thinking "what's the best stuff we can put out right now?" Same reason people with degrees that work at McDonalds are sad; sure they're making money, just not the kind of money they could be making.
