Life is Strange: Before The Storm (PC/PS4/XB1)

Developed by Deck Nine Games (formerly called Idol Minds, know for Pain, Ruin, & Ratchet & Clank Collection)
    Spoiler: show

GameKult found one of the screenshots on the server of Deck Nine Games’ official website before it was promptly removed. A user on the GameKult forums then alerted them to the Imgur album posted earlier, which includes the screenshot found on Deck Nine’s server in addition to others.

According to NeoGAF user J!NX, Deck Nine Games, which teased a narrative-driven title from a “leading AAA publisher” to be announced at E3 2017, has been working on a prequel to Life is Strange for a while. The game will reportedly let players explore the relationship between Chloe and Rachel.

If this really is a prequel based on Rachel and Chloe's relationship this game will be 100% pure emotional torture since we already know how their stories end.

Before the Storm is our reaction to so many of you asking for the chance to revisit Arcadia Bay. This is where Denver based Deck Nine Games come in. Deck Nine Games are veteran game developers who, although being a new narrative games studio, have an extremely talented team from videogames, TV and film and a powerful set of proprietary tools called Storyforge. Please join us in giving them a very warm welcome to the Life is Strange family. You’ll get to meet the team and see their fantastic work during E3. Be sure to tune into the IGN livestream on Monday 12th June at 12:00 noon Pacific for the world’s first gameplay reveal.

You will also no doubt be excited to hear that Ashly Burch, Chloe’s original voice actor, makes a welcome return to the family this time on writing duties. Fans of Ashly will know she’s an Emmy nominated writer and it’s great to have her writing dialogue for a new younger, 16 year old Chloe, this time voiced by extremely talented actress Rhianna DeVries.

Ashly is writing alongside a passionate and talented team of writers at Deck Nine lead by Lead Writer Zak Garriss. The writing team have been working hard to create a compelling and rich three episode story that’s set before the events of the first game and focuses on when Chloe meets Rachel. Unlike Max, Chloe has no rewind power, so we highly recommend you think before you speak..! Chloe’s sharp tongue will require her to live with whatever she says and as before, every single action and choice will have a direct consequence in the short, mid and long term.

We know that many of you would love to see more from Max. Due to the way in which the first game ended, we didn’t want to canonize one group of players’ choices over the other – a sentiment echoed strongly by our community. That being said, we will still be giving you one final chance to play as Max through the self-contained bonus “Farewell” episode, which takes place long before the events of Before the Storm. This stand-alone bonus episode, will release after episode 3, and is only available as part of the Deluxe Edition of Life is Strange: Before the Storm. Rest assured, anyone purchasing the complete season of Before the Storm will get the full story. Max’s ‘Farewell’ episode really is just a bonus episode for those who would like to play as her one final time.

Ashly Burch explained on twitter as to why she isn't voicing the main character. When voice-overs were being recorded, the actor's guild/union was striking. The studio got a non-union VA to do it instead.

Finished this over the weekend. My opinion is that it pales in comparison to LiS and was extremely hampered by being a prequel and not using the time travel feature. Chloe's Talk Back was a nice attempt at substituting for time travel but the number of times it was actually used were few and far between.

Rachel Amber and Chloe are supposedly the protagonists but they came off as whiny, petulant, emotionally abusive brats...aka teenagers, I guess. I suppose it is a true sign of getting old when you start agreeing with parents and authority figures in these games/movies than you do the young heroes.

For those who endure the emotional roller coaster through all three episodes, the final scene of the final episode gives an expected but no less brutal gut punch. Just one last time for the LiS series to say "fuck you".

Farewell Bonus Episode now available, Compete Edition previewed

    Spoiler: show
We are excited to say that the Bonus episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm, entitled ‘Farewell’, is available to download now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC (Steam). This episode welcomes back the original voice actors Ashly Burch & Hannah Telle who resume their roles as Chloe and Max in an emotional and nostalgic trip down memory lane. The physical, boxed version of Life is Strange: Before the Storm is also available now in the US and will be available in PAL territories on Friday 9th March 2018.

‘We can’t wait for fans to play Farewell, Max’s return is the perfect way to end the season and we can’t wait for fans to experience Life is Strange with her one last time’, said Jeff Litchford, Vice President at Deck Nine Games. ‘We want to thank the fans who have enjoyed this incredible journey with us, we know they will miss Chloe, Rachel and Max as much as we will.’

"After following their journeys for the last few years, it’s time to fondly wave farewell to Max and Chloe’, said Jon Brooke, Vice President of Brand at Square Enix External Studios. “The torch is being passed back to Michel Koch and Raoul Barbet's team at DONTNOD Entertainment, the creators of the original game who’ve been solely dedicated to creating the next Life is Strange for the past two years. We look forward to sharing an exciting new story and characters in the coming months”

A new trailer showcasing the first footage from the episode is also available now.

Fans who have the base game but wish to play Farewell can still upgrade to the Deluxe edition which will also give them access to extra outfits for the maingame, and a mixtape mode to create custom playlists of the in-game licensed music.
The boxed, Limited Edition of Life is Strange: Before the Storm is available from participating retailers and contains a physical artbook featuring art from Life is Strange: Before the Storm plus the licensed soundtrack on CD.

finished this yesterday, doesn't compare too too well to the mastahpiece that is LiS, felt a little rushed and the lack of a time travel mechanic hurt. but had some standout moments, mostly centered around Chloe + Rachel's relationship (The Tempest, the kiss, the fire, plus any time they nerded out with D&D). also the ending of the bonus episode with Max has left me adrift in an emotionally barren vacuum. 3/5 crying to pixels.
