Wtf is Calgary smoking. Number one in going after Smith and number two, grotesquely overpaying for him.
This is obviously a Walking Dead type situation where only one french guy can be on the team at one time. They got Drouin so they had to move him.
A 3rd for him is hilarious though.
I really don't understand why they went after Mike Smith, of all the available goalies this off-season. Raanta, Grubauer, Griess are all likely to be exposed and taken for nothing. If they were gonna pay out their eyeballs for Mike Smith anyway they probably could have made a pass at MAF too (although maybe they did, who knows).
Honestly, out of all the pieces we sent, the potential 2018 2nd rounder was probably the biggest. Brandon Hickey is a college kid who may or may not make the NHL (far from a guaranteed project) and Chad Johnson will likely go UFA. Arizona wanted him because they needed a goalie to protect.
Treliving has typically made a lot of savvy and smart moves as the GM. This one? ..eh. I have no doubt he went after other goalies but I wouldn't be surprised if the asking price was quite a bit higher. That being said, Treliving/the Flames may have a word of mouth deal in place with Vegas too. This expansion draft is going to be very interesting.
Regardless, I want Jon Gillies as the backup in the NHL next season for sure.
Also, I forget if the exemption lists are going to be made public or not. I wanna see who is getting exposed!
Edit: Welp, as much as I think he's a shit, biased, stupid hockey reporter, he at least provided the info I was looking for
Eric Francis @EricFrancis
Can confirm the #Flames didn't do anything silly by protecting Brouwer on expansion list. He was exposed. Ferland, Lazar & Bennett protected
Official protection lists aren't until 10a tomorrow, but some are already getting leaked.
Caps:
Forwards:
Ovi, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Burakovsky, Johansson, Eller, Wilson
Defense:
Niskanen, Orlov, Carlson
Goaltender:
Holtby
Leaves Connolly, Schmidt, Alzner, Grubauer exposed =/ all but alzner are RFA (and if they take an RFA, no compensation comes back)
Vegas is almost guaranteed to be taking Grubauer and Raanta. Whether that makes you feel better or worse, I don't know.
Edit: Isn't Alzner's contract up? He's not eligible to be picked if so.
When all 30 NHL teams release their expansion draft-protected lists on June 18 at 10 a.m. ET, the Vegas Golden Knights will have an exclusive and unprecedented 72-hour window to meet and negotiate with impending free agents (unrestricted and restricted) who are still technically under contract until June 30 with their existing employers.
“Money’s not a problem,” general manager George McPhee said in a recent Q&A session with season-ticket holders. “Our owner, Bill Foley, is not afraid to spend to get the right player, and it’s our job to identify who those players are.”
I think that FA window is gonna fuck some teams harder than the actual expansion draft will.

Mike Smith: "I can't really complain about my time in Arizona other than we kind of failed as far as the winning part of it."

Lists are coming out...some surprises...looking like the Caps may lose Schmidt now with all the goalies available
Where are you seeing this at?
