2000 US troops from Afghanistan and 500 from Iraq will be sent back to the States in mid-January. Gen Mark Milley has not endorsed the decision.
Iraqi militants celebrated the announcement by firing rockets into the Green Zone for the first time in over a month.Acting US Defense Secretary Chris Miller - who was installed last week after Mr Trump abruptly fired Mark Esper - said the move reflected the president's policy "to bring the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to a successful and responsible conclusion and to bring our brave service members home".
"We will protect our children from the heavy burden and toll of perpetual war, and we will honour the sacrifices made in the services of peace and stability in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world," he said.
He said the decision followed "continuous engagement with the president's national security cabinet".
Mr Miller said the US had met its goal of defeating extremists and helping "local partners and allies to take the lead in the fight". US officials said the withdrawal plans had yet to be hammered out in detail and it was not yet clear which troops would be pulled out, Reuters news agency reports.
Afghanistan goes one year without a combat death making Fort Hood statistically more dangerous lol.

The majority of the ANA is just a bunch of goat farmers with uniforms. Most of them were never interested in defending anything. Whenever we tried to train them they were always either high as balls, or plotting some retarded way to steal our shit.
honoring the memory of ARVN
Well, lol.
I’m sure the Afghan commander was given a heads up but was just too high to remember. Let me guess how this story ends, he remarkably regained control of the FOB and single handedly took out all the looters who may or may not have been part of his family and/or village once all the goods were gone.
Take whatever these guys say with a grain of salt to cover their own asses. These are the type of people that would want to raid certain bazaars because it was competition to their platoon leaders cousin’s bazaar. And then act bewildered as fuck when we’d tell them no.
Because the US would never do something shitty.
Everything I've ever heard from people stationed over there is that the ANA is a fucking disaster and has long been beyond fixing.
Also, it's been known for a long time now that the US was leaving that base. And I would strongly wager that the locals not knowing the specific time/date they were leaving was absolutely by design because the ANA couldn't be trusted to not have that shit leak out to the Taliban. OPSEC baby

Except the US transferred authority of the Parwan detention center to the ANA years ago. It also runs on a completely independent power system from the rest of BAF.
Damn were so sick of them that we even took our bullets home with us lol
