Spielberg's recent drama films (Lincoln and Bridge of Spies) were both really well done. His animated/fantasy films though...

Trailer looks really slick. I have never read the book but I guess I have plenty of time between now and then.

I'm only a 3rd of the way through the book at the moment and really liking it. But this movie doesn't seem to capture the feel of the book at all - it's too blockbuster. Too flashy, too "omg look at this super kewl VR gaiz" while ignoring the heart of the book's story. You know, after SAO and all the other "isekai" anime based in video games I am pretty tired of the VR world angle and what's drawing me into the book isn't the concept of a VR MMO but rather the treasure hunt aspect and 80s references (about which I am largely educated thanks to old friends) (not old but like friends I had a while ago you know what I mean).

The book hooks you immediately with the promise of a DaVinci Code-like thrill ride where the MC attempts to track down a nigh impossible to find item. That concept should have been played up to hook the audience here in the trailers too instead of vomiting VR game porn all over the place. At its heart it is not actually a video game book, I can already tell that much. Largely the theme is the struggle of humanity to survive in a decaying world and actually get a piece of the pie, and more specifically about this one kid's quest to rise out of obscurity and do something his current awful life would never accommodate if not for the VR world. It merely uses video games (and tabletop and etc) as the vehicle to tell its story. This movie looks like it's missing the point entirely, which is too bad. If it wasn't so seemingly obsessed with showing flashy yet meaningless graphics to an audience it probably assumes has the attention span of a goldfish, if it was a little quieter and a little more thoughtful, it could have been a movie that looked really good...

The heart of the book is how many 80s name drops the author can cram in each page, to say its more is being generous.

I enjoyed the book because I turned my brain off and accepted it for what it is, even still it was a very hard swallow to get past the main character being a mary sue throughout the story.

All of that will all work fine for a blockbuster tho and will make a ton on nostalgia alone. As for me, Ill go watch the movie in theaters because GUNDAM!

I still can't believe they're making an adaptation of ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny.

I mean almost everyone did. SAO just pushed it so far into the mainstream that now every seasons of anime has at least 2 isekai series even when that has really nothing at all to do with the story.

Log Horizon did game stuff best!

I remember posting something similar years ago when I finished the book. Book was alright but this movie looks ridiculous in a bad way.

If it can be a shut off your brain and enjoy the nostalgia movie without needing the main characters do pants on head retarded shit to move the plot along (hi2u alien covenant) I'll be happy. I mean shit Battletoads made a cameo.

I must not be far enough in the book to be jaded about it yet. So far, I still like it a lot.
Maybe it drops the ball or something. A good book can turn bad really really fast. I'm surprised everyone is pretty much saying the book wasn't that good. It seems fine to me... not that I was expecting high literature from it to begin with.

It was a fun, quick read for me. I didn't get some of the references but enjoyed the treasure hunt aspect a lot. One of the problems is that it's written in a young teen style without expanding on a greater sci-fi theme. Instead of focusing on the Brave New World aspect it focused on a treasure hunt. I don't think the current theme added anything to the science fiction literature that wasn't already essayed (see: BNW).

Also, the lead character is pretty much the epitome of a Mary Sue, as mentioned above.
