When the live action Jungle Book came out and wasn’t terrible and did decent at the box office it perked their attention. When Beauty & The Beast came out and every girl from 12-40 ran out to see it, it was solidified.

We’ve got live action Aladdin, Lion King, Little Mermaid, and Mulan all in the pipe in the next 1-3 years.

Because it will make them a buttload of money. More money than those low-tier sequels or TV series would do for probably less effort as well. That shitty Beauty and the Beast live action only costed 255M and it made 1.2B.
