Cannon Busters is a comic book series created by LeSean Thomas back in 2005. While it may not be mainstream like the stuff under the DC and Marvel umbrella, it was well received by critics and fans alike.
In 2014, LeSean Thomas started crowd funding through Kickstarter to develop an animated adaptation of his comic books. His goal was to produce an 8-10 minute pilot episode alongside Tim Yoon, who has been a producer for animated series like The Legend of Korra and Batman: Under the Red Hood, while the animation itself will be done by Japanese animation studio, Satelight.
In an interesting turn of events, it was just announced at the Netflix Anime Slate 2017 that Netflix has just picked up LeSean Thomas’ Cannon Busters for a full series. It’ll be a 12 episode series, each running at around 22 minutes. During the event, LeSean mentioned that he wanted to work specifically with Japanese creators as Japanese styled anime allows for more trans-genre exploration, something you don’t usually get in the US.
The following is the summary of the Cannon Busters Netflix animated series, as stated in the Netflix Anime Slate 2017 press release.
Follow the adventures and exploits of S.A.M, a high-end, royal-class, friendship droid who’s joined by a quirky, discarded maintenance robot and a brash, deadly fugitive. Together, the unlikely trio embarks on an unforgettable journey in a fantastic and dangerous world in search of S.A.M’s best friend, the heir to a powerful kingdom under siege.
The release date for Cannon Busters is yet to be announced.

New trailer is up on Netflix app. Looks like LeSean Thomas was able to get many of Japanese top talent for his series and I’m excited with August 15th release date. I couldn’t find English trailer on YouTube but the show will have different dubs for each region.
Doesn’t also hurt when he got Cowboy Bebop animators working on this. Like the god of action Yutaka Nakamura(you can easily see his cut with hand drawn car breaking the wall into cubes with amazing background effects). Thank you Yutaka for never going cheap with animation.
To be honest this was kind of lame. If it weren’t for the Casey and Sam characters I probably would’ve dropped it midway through. Also, the pacing and plotting of the last two episodes were wonky as shit.
