Rumour : Microsoft to drop Office 365 access to offices out of Mainstream support in October 2020

So if you read that link and scroll down to the bottom of the page it says this

Effective October 13th, 2020, Office 365 will only allow Office client connectivity from subscription clients (Office 365 ProPlus), or Office perpetual clients within mainstream support, to connect to Office 365 services. See the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy site for Office mainstream support dates.

From how most people understand, Office 2016 Mainframe support ends the same date, which means that unless you have O365 Premium (to download the new version) or w/e the new office version is 2018 or 2019 you will lose access to O365 emails from Outlook 2010/2013/2016 in October 2020.


We are currently upgrading PCs and going to Office 2016, this really sucks if it's true and we might change to Gapps

We are already in the process of upgrading. Outlook 2010 can't hit an Office 365 exchange server per Microsoft's rep to the county, so I'm getting everyone on 2013 now. We were using Exchange 2010, which Office 2016 can't even hit.

Huh? Most of our PC are still on OFfice 2010 and we get to O365 NP

Weird, they told us once they convert our exchange server to 365, Office 2010 absolutely won't work. So every agency in the county had to upgrade. Was due to be upgraded anyways since 2010 was past end of life anyways and I don't think was getting any more security patches.

Office 2010 is gettin updates till 2020 at least (unless your country is different)

Still sucked since if we want Active Sync we need either a local Exchange server or O365.

I was looking for Gapps, but they don't do Active Sync since its proprietary and we have to deal with Imap

The University of Maryland, College Park went from an Exchange environment to Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and it was a nightmare. Most of the issues with implementation had to do with emails buried in folders and Gmail not being able to easily convert folders to tags. If a user had a placeholder folder ('2016 Emails' folder with nothing in it, but a bunch of sub-folders with emails in it) everything under that empty folder got lost/dropped/etc.

One of the people in charge of the project ended up getting canned over it (allegedly).
