I know Katie. I like her. She is good person and a good scientist.

She is 100% being used by the media in this case though. The equivalence being made is pretty terrible. Her career has 100% been made now though, she has an open door anywhere at anytime which is awesome - but yeah...

But yeah, BBC has a whole article dedicated to her.

    I found this interesting.

It’s the end of an era. After 130 years of faithful service, the so-called “prototype kilogram” upon which nations base their weight measurements was just replaced by a new standard based on fundamental laws of physics.

Astronomers probably just saw a black hole swallow a dead star

No luck on the EM follow-up yet for anything that matters. Still very, very, very cool. I'll come back with the THIS IS WHY THIS IS AWESOME when we see one with a good EM counterpart.

    Check it out tomorrow!

Today, after a nearly four year journey, The Lynx Team signed off on our Final Report and submitted it to NASA.

Our report will be made public tomorrow, and can be downloaded at
    https://www.lynxobservatory.com/

Also, always vote for Lynx if ever asked about the NASA decadal project

Pasadena, CA—A star traveling at ultrafast speeds after being ejected by the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy was spotted by an international team of astronomers including Carnegie’s Ting Li and Alex Ji. Their work is published by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Hurtling at the blistering speed of 6 million kilometers per hour, the star is moving so fast that it will leave the Milky Way and head into intergalactic space.

Bolded for how crazy fast that is.

Imagine if that ripped through our solar system and just obliterated everything in the blink of an eye. Even if it didn't "hit" earth or the sun the gravity disturbances would surely destroy everything.

And to think that's only 0.05% the speed of light. It will still take forever to leave the Milky Way.

Edit: off by a decimal with my napkin math

    HOLY SHIT

Stupid fucking forum just ate a really nice post I made in response to archi cuz of a fucking image link. Jesus christ.

This is going to be much less informative:

tl;dr : The solar system is very, very, very empty and the distance scale outside of the inner rocky planet region is so large that in MOST scenarios, a 2.4M_sun object traveling at that velocity shouldn't have any lasting, or even brief, effect on the orbits of any of the inner planets without a direct impact to them.

I had a good analogy and stuff but fuck man. Stupid forums. Fuck you Ragns

Even this image greatly over-represents the size of the planets with respect to the distance scale

Add a new member to the Tyrannosaur subgroup of Dinosaurs.

‘Reaper of Death’ tyrannosaur discovered in Canada
Jared Voris is no stranger to death. By early 2018, the University of Calgary master’s student had spent more than a year poring over bones in museum collections, studying how tyrannosaurs matured from hatchlings into hulking terrors. During one visit to the collections of Alberta’s Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, he noticed a cabinet with fossils he couldn’t quite place.

Now, after two years of careful research, Voris and his colleagues have identified the first new Canadian tyrannosaurid to be found in 50 years. Stretching 26 feet in length, the dinosaur is named Thanatotheristes, Greek for “reaper of death.”
    https://www.nationalgeographic.com/s...overed-canada/

It is now the the oldest known North American based tyrannosaurid.

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features...-or-dinosaurs/

Eight years ago, Benton published two papers on the error rate in dinosaur species identification and found that 48.2 percent of “new dinosaurs” are eventually cast aside, deemed invalid for a variety of reasons (see the chart below).

Astronomers discover scorching hot planet where it rains liquid iron
Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), researchers observed an "ultra-hot" giant exoplanet, where temperatures can exceed 2,400 degrees Celsius during the day — hot enough to vaporize metals.

    https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/06/15...aging-in-mice/

In 2005, University of California, Berkeley, researchers made the surprising discovery that making conjoined twins out of young and old mice — such that they share blood and organs — can rejuvenate tissues and reverse the signs of aging in the old mice. The finding sparked a flurry of research into whether a youngster’s blood might contain special proteins or molecules that could serve as a “fountain of youth” for mice and humans alike.

But a new study by the same team shows that similar age-reversing effects can be achieved by simply diluting the blood plasma of old mice — no young blood needed.

In the study, the team found that replacing half of the blood plasma of old mice with a mixture of saline and albumin — where the albumin simply replaces protein that was lost when the original blood plasma was removed — has the same or stronger rejuvenation effects on the brain, liver and muscle than pairing with young mice or young blood exchange. Performing the same procedure on young mice had no detrimental effects on their health.

This discovery shifts the dominant model of rejuvenation away from young blood and toward the benefits of removing age-elevated, and potentially harmful, factors in old blood.
does this mean if we donate plasma twice a week, we can get paid AND get the benefits of anti-aging? O_O

or is that not quite the same as this diluting method? not sure what they put back into you when they draw plasma, haha.

maybe i should start looking into visiting my biolife clinic again...
