China is forcing "graduated" Uighur's (Muslims) to work in factories to produce goods for 83 global brands including Nike, Apple, and Dell. The factories are designed to look like maximum security prisons.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute said this was the next phase in China's re-education of Uighurs.

The ASPI report comes after a senior Chinese official told reporters in December that members of the minority group being held in the camps had now "graduated".

The report said it was "extremely difficult" for Uighurs to refuse or escape the work assignments, with the threat of "arbitrary detention" hanging over them.

It added that there was evidence of local governments and private brokers being "paid a price per head" by the Xinjiang government to organise the assignments, which ASPI describes as "a new phase of the Chinese government's ongoing repression" of Uighurs.

ASPI said it had identified 27 factories in nine Chinese provinces that had been using Uighur labour transferred from Xinjiang since 2017.

At the factories, ASPI said the Uighurs were typically forced to live in segregated dormitories, have Mandarin lessons and "ideological training" outside of working hours, were subjected to constant surveillance and banned from observing religious practices.

The Washington Post visited a factory mentioned in the report, which produces trainers for sports giant Nike. It said it resembled a prison, with barbed wire, watchtowers, cameras and a police station.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has fired health minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta over the country's Covid response. Mandetta is described as Brazil's Fauci.

Mandetta, a doctor, garnered popular support for his pandemic response that included promotion of broad isolation measures enacted by state governors. Bolsonaro, for his part, repeatedly characterized the virus as a “little flu,” said shutting down the economy would cause more damage than confining only high-risk Brazilians, and touted the yet-unproven efficacy of an anti-malarial drug.

Republicans close to the White House say Trump has complained about Fauci’s positive media attention and sought to leave him out of task force briefings. Bolsonaro, likewise, had convened doctors without inviting Mandetta and, in a televised interview earlier this month, said Mandetta had failed to show “humility.” A few days later, on April 5, Bolsonaro told a group of supporters that he would act against officials in his government who “are full of themselves.”

On Wednesday, with Mandetta’s dismissal looking near certain, his health surveillance secretary Wanderson de Oliveira tendered his resignation. An epidemiologist who worked at the health ministry for more than a decade, de Oliveira presided over many of the press conferences when Mandetta was unable, and was also a booster of quarantine measures to prevent the virus’ spread.

The UK has announced that they will import 150 Romanians to pick fruits and vegetable due to the lack of seasonal help.

Air Charter Service has told the BBC that the first flight will land on Thursday in Stansted carrying 150 Romanian farm workers.

The firm told the BBC that the plane is the first of up to six set to operate between mid-April and the end of June.

British farmers recently warned that crops could be left to rot in the field because of a shortage of seasonal workers from Eastern Europe. Travel restrictions due to the coronavirus lockdown have meant most workers have stayed at home.

Several UK growers have launched a recruitment drive, calling for local workers to join the harvest to prevent millions of tonnes of fruit and vegetables going to waste. However, concerns remain that they won't be able to fulfil the demand on farms.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) said up to 70,000 fruit and vegetable pickers were needed. It is calling for a modern-day "land army" of UK workers.

A national campaign is appealing to students and those who have lost their jobs in bars, cafes and shops to help with the harvest.

Kim is the family name, and there was a politically prominent uncle but he challenged Jong-un early in the reign and wound up being ripped apart by an anti-aircraft gun. the other uncle with the right name drowned many years ago. Jong-un has a well-regarded and inner-sanctum loyalist sister in Kim Yo-jong who carries more gravitas than a seven-year old girl but North Korea is a deeply misogynistic and patriarchal society and off the top of my head i can't remember a woman ever ruling a communist state. there are/were the other two brothers whom dearly departed father Kim Jong-il found unsatisfactory, one disowned as a bitch of Western ideology (Kim Jong-nam) and the other deemed unfit to rule as simply an effeminate bitch (Kim Jong-chul). Jong-nam was the former heir apparent, and considered a threat to Jong-un's rule, but of course that challenge went silent in a Malaysian airport a few years ago. he had a sister Kim Sol-song who is reportedly still a player in the Korean government, around whom some of her murdered brother's loyalists have rallied, but she is not considered a Jong-il confidant like her half-sister Yo-jong.

fundamentally, no one knows. Dear Leader could already be dead, could be a vegetable, could be recovering fine. among the Kim family you have the girl child, the loyalist sister, the dissidentish half-sister, and the Fredo brother, all of whom are essentially unsatisfactory as successors but all of whom could conceivably maneuver (or be maneuvered) their way to power. reaching further down for a nephew or cousin is possible, a non-dynastic selection from the nation's communist elite is possible, though both unprecedented. previous transfers of power have gone smoothly as the designated son was groomed by Dear Father for years prior to succession. this will likely be messier and the result of unseen power plays we shall only learn about in detail decades from now.

frankly none of the contenders inspire confidence and i suspect a junta the most likely outcome, though North Korean society is so invested in the singular leader they will need at least a figurehead to present the people. but also i don't know shit and neither does anyone else (even our IC) as North Korea is the most closed off society on earth so let's grab popcorn and find out together.

Venezuela claims that there was an attempted coup this past Sunday (May 3rd) by armed individuals, two of whom are U.S. citizens, who arrived by sea.

Venezuelan authorities said eight armed men were killed during Sunday's alleged coup attempt.

In a live broadcast on Monday, Mr Maduro displayed what he said were the passports of the two arrested Americans - Airan Berry and Luke Denman - who work for a Florida-based security company.

He told viewers: "They were playing Rambo, they were playing hero."

The Venezuelan government said the group of "terrorist mercenaries" had left Colombia and landed in the town of Macuto, about 21 miles (34km) north of the capital Caracas, on Sunday, where they were arrested.

When asked about them on Tuesday morning, Mr Trump said: "We'll find out. We just heard about it", adding that they had no government connection.

Jordan Goudreau, a former member of the US Army special forces, has, however, been quick to claim an association.

He told Reuters news agency: "They're working with me. Those are my guys."

Mr Goudreau, who leads a Florida-based private security firm called Silvercorp USA, said he was one of the plot's organizers.

According to a recent investigation by the Associated Press news agency, Mr Goudreau has become involved with a group of retired Venezuelan military men who have allegedly been training deserters from Venezuela's security forces at secret camps in Colombia.

They have reportedly plotted previous cross-border incursions which failed to get off the ground. The plan is said to have involved raiding military bases in the hope of igniting a popular rebellion that would end in the ousting of the president.
