The comments on that are amazing.
not too surprised as there's been very little U.S. coverage but Mexico is going to the polls Sunday, and it is very likely the populist socialistish possibly-unhinged insurgent Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will replace the departing Enrique Peña Nieto of chinga tu puta madre fame (Mexican presidents serving a single six-year term and fucking their whoreish mothers a time-honored Mexican tradition).
Mexico has traditionally been a 1-party 'democracy', the PRI (Nieto's party and Obrador's former party), but since 2000 their 70-year stranglehold on power has been shattered and they have been discredited outside of urban enclaves as violence and corruption continue to hollow out the nation. with the cartel power struggles erupting once more into low-grade civil war Mexico suffered its deadliest year in recorded history in 2017, and in May 2018 its deadliest month, as the assassination of politicians and political candidates has entered triple digits during the campaigning season. additionally poverty is on the rise with over 40% of the country living below the poverty line. Mexico also has the dubious pleasure of being by far the most corrupt nation in the OECD, perhaps most flamboyantly displayed by the not 1 but 2 times El Chapo Guzman simply bribed his way out of prison.
all in all the status quo is a nightmare and the people are turning to a rather cheeky demagogue as the solution, a solution some fear is Hugo Chavez come again. i don't know if Obrador is that but he is light on specifics, heavy on rhetoric, and not particularly vested in democratic principles as demonstrated by the two times he refused to accept electoral defeat and instead declared the campaigns in which he lost illegitimate. that said it will take a herculean effort to do a worse job than either the PRI or PAN have done for the last 30 years.
here's some facts and stuff if you guys wanna crash course literally the only country we border that isn't just us but cold and full of syrup.

Kim Jong Un continues being great guy, really gets along with Trump.
turns out Mexicans are crazy slow at counting votes and as such we won't get the majority of the votes tallied until tomorrow morning, but the exit polls and early returns show Obrador romping the other candidates, though with a plurality rather than a majority. the PRI candidate has already accepted the inevitable and conceded defeat, and the PAN candidate will probably do likewise in the coming hours.
edit: Anaya of PAN candidacy has conceded as well, Obrador will be president.
the extent of Obrador's victory will be measured by how well his insurgent party ('Morena', now all of four years old) does in the legislative and regional races. in one of the most important such races an Obrador ally who happens to be a skinny Jewish scientist with a vagina will become the first such of all those things to be elected mayor of North America's largest city in Mexico City.
Nah man it's actually decided by which politician is left alive after the annual purge.

results are in and Obrador has officially annihilated the competition. it is the first time in decades anyone has snagged an outright majority, at 53%, and he crushed his rivals in down-ballot races. it looks like Morena and their allies will control majorities in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, and the PRI's regional political machines have been dismantled in many a state and city. it is an unprecedented mandate in the history of actual Mexican democracy.

And now just over last couple of days

I'm not saying they are related but
He (first Mayor)also appeared to have been placed on a "narco list" -- a list of people allegedly associated with the drug trade -- by the National Police Commission
