I mean, pretty sure he called it now instead of at the Fixed Date was because he knew at the very least he'd be guaranteed an extension on his administration vs the chance he could lose waiting for the October 2023 date

Welp it went exactly as I predicted and election was indeed completely pointless, the only good thing that might come of this is there is talk that because it's another minority and not what they wanted that Trudeau could feasibly step down in a year or so and let Freeland take the reigns. Given that he is by far the liberals biggest weakness right now I think that would be a smart move. Of course that means it won't happen because he does the stupid thing at every opportunity but such is life.

Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called the unprecedented move an “extraordinary decision” that “reflects the exceptional seriousness” of the situation.

What he called “a new partnership” excluding France, and the resulting cancellation of a $66 billion Australian contract to buy diesel-powered French submarines, “constitute unacceptable behavior among allies and partners,” Le Drian said in a statement. France also recalled its ambassador to Australia.

A Navy nuclear engineer and his wife have been charged with repeatedly trying to pass secrets about U.S. nuclear submarines to a foreign country, in an alleged espionage plot discovered by the FBI, according to court documents.

Authorities say Jonathan Toebbe, who has a top-secret clearance, “has passed, and continues to pass, Restricted Data as defined by the Atomic Energy Act . . . to a foreign government . . . with the witting assistance of his spouse, Diana Toebbe,” according to a criminal complaint filed in West Virginia and unsealed Sunday.

The court papers say that in December 2020, an FBI official received a package that had been sent to the foreign country containing U.S. Navy documents, a letter and instructions for how to conduct encrypted communications with the person offering the information.
