Should have gone in 2016 so we could have racked another legend that died in that year.
Didn't know it was still a thing. Thought Chris Henson rounded everyone up

I actually still have a few people I talk to on AIM, but I guess I'll just end up talking to them on Steam or Discord now instead.
Not at all surprising it is going away though, the other options out there are just better now.
RIP AIM an ancient part of internet history gone forever. I remember before the original release of FFXI on PC in the US I was organizing my planned static on AIM with my group of FFXI friends that I had known online already for years, making sure we all went to the same server and picked different jobs and discussing via AIM chatrooms what the game would be like once we could finally log on. I used it for years and years since the day it came out in 1997, and prior to that regular AOL IMs, but AIM really was a game changer for the way people communicated online
AIM is one of those thins that I would figure would live forever... or would have had the plug pulled earlier. 20 years is a pretty good run though.
After someone brought this to my attention this morning, I logged in for the first time in probably a decade. It was amazing seeing the old screen names. There were obviously tons of the totally unoriginal ones, but seeing names that were so late-90s/early 2000s with references made me laugh.
Not as sad as I was when MSN messenger went.
Still, RIP.
Didn't MSN get rolled over into Skype or something? I only ever used that for people in FFXI, but I could swear at one point it just changed/updated and I was no longer using MSN, but had the same thing.
Microsoft bought skype and for some reason maintained both MSN and Skype for awhile until they decided to do the smart thing and delete MSN but by that time Skype had become bloated shit.
Just realized I still have AIM 7.3 installed on this computer.
Fucking BG people making me install AIM when MSN Messenger 4.7 and Google Talk were totally fine.
I'm pretty sure Ayn and I are some of the last people in the country who actually communicate through AIM.

I kinda weened myself away from AIM between the mix of them downgrading/removing features (multiple log-ins, yo) and those I frequently talked to just kind of disappearing. Discord's probably the closest to it since, but there are still some things about it I dislike. Skype just feels like ass unless you wanna make a call/vidchat.
My high school/college friends disappeared and it was easier to text me during FFXI time than anything else.

Haven't used it in years, but damn this gets me right in the nostalgia feels. I've met and made so many friends through this.
I've still been using it though Trillian. Planning on cleaning out my AIM list when it shuts down though.
A suggestion for the forum staff; since that's going away, if it's possible, could you give us a option to add our discord names to our profiles? I know that's out of the blue but I know a person or two who asked for my Discord name when they found out what was happening with AIM.
I vaguely remember the original Facebook messenger being tied to your AIM before they figured out their own software. I'm not imagining that am I?
Pretty sure they had a "Find friends via their AIM handle" option of some sort.
Well, the 2 friends I still talk to on AIM, I at least have on steam as well for once AIM shuts down lol. I just talk to everyone else on Discord though.
