On one hand: he did ask, and they did consent.
On the other hand: why in the fuck would you ask that?!?
This is still the most confusing part for me too.
At least if they were out doing some raw raping I could rationalize it in some kind of "the small lizards use a different strategy to pass on their genes" Galapagos island animal shit way.
I really just don't understand the impulse to wank it in public.
Won't someone please think of the potted plants?
that's not at all what i'm getting out of that.
honestly, as apologies go, I think it's a pretty good one. he's essentially saying that at the time he didn't realize why it was bad, now he does, and he's sorry. then proceeds to apologize to everyone impacted, not just the women themselves but the professionals whose work is affected because it's tied to his name, as well.
it comes across as genuine apology/remorse to me.
Oh yeah worded that bad should've separating what he meant from my interpretation of the events as described. Meant more like he honestly had no idea anything was wrong now knows because knowing is half the battle he's sorry for it. But that what he describes he did is significantly tamer than well everything else in this thread and arguably more of a gray area... a really weird gray area
Only thing I can come with is I know some guys think it's kind of funny like poop and throwup humor only arguably cruder and some of his humor is fairly crude?
I don't think it's wrong to ask a woman if you can masturbate in front of her. Gross, but isn't asking permission the whole point? As long as you're not in a position of power over her (like Weinstein) at least. I mean maybe learn to read the room better, and obviously a rando dude walking around asking women that question would be wrong, but this doesn't seem to be that.
Problem is, there is at least one verified occasion with multiple witnesses where he whipped it out despite not being given permission. If you're taking laughter as permission for a sexual act with a stranger you are not doing it right, buddy.
Yes it's wrong because he's in a position of power over them. He describes this in his letter even, what is just a question to him is a predicament for them. Read his letter, he admits it and describes why it was wrong himself.
If you're the boss of someone, or use your power to influence others on behalf of someone, even asking a woman for her permission is no longer asking; they have every reason to be conflicted on how to respond.

Man I really don't want to believe the Takei story, but having four people say they had heard the story is pretty damning.
I can't find the clip but Trevor Noah had pretty much the exact response that I was thinking about every time a new celeb is trending. It's gotten to the point that you hope it's because they died, not because they sexually assaulted someone

Really surprised about the Rattner story. Not that he did those things--but that it got covered up. He's a shit director and doesn't have the "oh he's too good so we have to protect him" shield option.
