    Today Blizzard posted a teaser, but didn't say what it was. It looks like classic wow, as all the old npc's are in the right place in the starting zones. But everything is in High-def, with shadow textures and high def exclamation marks. The footage is not from a private server and it's not legion either. So people are speculating that this is the alpha version of classic.

    Based off of v1.12 aka “The Drums of War,” The Last Major Update Before the First Expansion
    So we asked ourselves, would it still be possible to deliver an authentic classic experience if we took our modern code, with all its back-end improvements and changes, and used it to process the Patch 1.12 game data? While that might seem counterintuitive, this would inherently include classic systems like skill ranks, old quests and terrain, talents, and so on, while later features like Transmog and Achievements would effectively not exist because they were entirely absent from the data. After weeks of R&D, experimentation, and prototyping, we were confident we could deliver the classic WoW content and gameplay without sacrificing the literally millions of hours put in to back-end development over the past 13 years.

    The PVE side of things is going to end up weird. Most fights were mechanically super simple, and much of it seemed to be balanced around 2/3 the raid not knowing how to play the game. Now characters will be a fair bit stronger than at launch (1.12 balance and talents, 16 debuff slots), far more players will know how to move and gear/play their classes properly, the server tick rate will be drastically higher, rotations and boss strats are known inside and out, etc.

    Combined with crappy amount of drops you got for a 40 man raid, players are going to be strongly encouraged to low man most things, than try to build a real raid for naxx. I wonder how many appropriately geared players with modern wow skills it would even require to clear something like BWL in 1.12.

    Probably, yeah. It says a lot about the development of the game though. If they're able to release a playable version of it (at least part of it) I can't see it not coming out next year.

    It's a slice of the game, a very small one apparently as well. From their updates and Dev Watercooler things, I'd bet we have at least 18 months possibly up to 3 years to wait.

    It's not worth it to me since the private servers always ran the part of the game their demoing flawlessly, so there's nothing to see or feel about their code that will make it any better or special. Especially considering they were handed that code and used it as an aide.

    If the ticket was half price I'd get it for other reasons and then dip my toe in at least to see the mass of people. I know on the private servers mob competition was insane, if they do implement any QOL changes I'd think they'd start there.

    Then only thing that will fix it is increased spawn rates or shared tags. Even with a cap on population and queues which private servers have, 100 people trying to farm low drop rate buzzards in red ridge or slimes in wetlands is an absolute nightmare. It's either adjust your playtime to down hours or skip.

    I have disliked the sharding stuff and cross realm stuff ever since it's been implemented. Everything from non-current expansions is artificially crowded. One example is MoP; for some odd reason only MoP's "rares" take 30m-1h to respawn and none of them will ever be up virtually because so many different people at any point in time are camping them. The turn-in for the Champions of Azeroth Emissary is always super crowded at any time due to cross realm. /rant off.

    If they don't implement any kind of sharding or make any changes, it's going to be a mess thou. Vanilla really only supports a tiny number of players in an area/questing farming. Mob respawn times are super long, drop rates for quest items are often extremely low(and they can only be looted to one player so grouping up doesn't help), and you can't get kill credit for something you or your group didn't tag first. I'm envisioning dozens of players standing around starter zones trying to claim boars or whatever for hours like it's fucking dragons aery.
