The movies were great, but far from perfect. A TV series could allow proper pacing and unnecessary character trait changes.

It's actually Tom Bombadil's Big Bombastic Variety Hour. Hobbit talent shows, elven singing competitions, and this week, the Mordorian all-Orc tabernacle choir.

This would be great as a Silmarillion mini series.

^I agree. I would rather it be on a major network though because I don't want to sign up for these streaming services just to watch one or two shows.

Is this allowed to happen? i thought Tolkien's family were clamming down on control of the IP.

I think Bezos was actually directly involved in getting the rights for this one. He's a big Tolkien nerd iirc.

Also, the rumored price for the rights is 200-250 million bucks. Alleged costs to produce a season are at 125-150 million.

To put it in perspective, HBO passed on it because it was gonna be too expensive.

    HBO.

I'll pass on a network TV cheese version of LoTR. Better off with it someone like Amazon or HBO's hands so it isn't focus grouped to death

So, not the Lord of the Rings... I'm cool with that

So... they'll be covering the Hobbit?

    (I know, I know, there's a shitton of lore that pre-dates the hobbit >_>)
