The movies were great, but far from perfect. A TV series could allow proper pacing and unnecessary character trait changes.

I think Bezos was actually directly involved in getting the rights for this one. He's a big Tolkien nerd iirc.

Also, the rumored price for the rights is 200-250 million bucks. Alleged costs to produce a season are at 125-150 million.

To put it in perspective, HBO passed on it because it was gonna be too expensive.
