This might be where you see some people diverge. When you look at some of the stories in Scifi/Fantasy that reach a very wide audience, like GoT for example, you'll find that while there are certainly fantastical elements in there; the story, the characters, the environments are all grounded in reality and make logical sense relating to the world that they're in. If Star Wars is a series where there basically are no rules, and anything/everything can be done/undone with no explanation as to why, then it's harder for it to resonate emotionally because it stops being a quasi reflection of our world. We stop being able to relate to the characters and their situations on a basic level. That previous part is bolded because I know that fantasy does a lot of fantastical things, but there's always less backlash and more understanding when there's reasoning behind it and it makes sense in the world the characters live in.

It also seems weird to me to see people claiming this is just a kids movie. Is it? I honestly don't know. Star Trek has PG ratings, but I wouldn't necessarily call those kids movies.

What I didn't like is that it ruined such a powerful death scene for her. It was one of the mostt powerful scenes, Kylo not being able to pull the trigger, her just quickly being sucked out into space. I was fucking shocked by it. Way more emotional than Luke's death (which I was ok with). And I'm sitting there like, wow, thats how they did it, this is why they weren't worried about putting Leia into episode 9. I accepted her death. Then she wakes her us up IN SPACE and saves her own life. Meh
Just agreeing with you here. I was shocked when she got sucked out as well.

I agree. It would've created a perfect narrative impetus for Kylo to go in multiple different directions, in that he himself held back but effectively still killed her

Bad movie, worst of all, story was a huge mess, what pisses me off is acting wasn't bad at all, but dialogues and story were horrible, i know star wars movies story arent written by Hemingway but still, get a better writer, director, etc.

Just saw it yesterday. I loved it. It for sure wasn't perfect, but it was a very enjoyable SW flick for me.

(Disclaimer: Next bits are my personal thoughts, not trying to convince anyone of anything. You're fine to not like the film. It won't be for everyone.)

I go into these movies knowing they can't capture what the original did. It's impossible. What made SW so amazing had a lot to do with taking special effects and turning them on its head when no one else had the vision.

There's little that ILM/Skywalker Sound can do that's all that different from what a million superhero films are already doing. (Especially when they have a hand in a lot of those films as well.) And of course nostalgia doesn't help. Hell, even I enjoyed having puppet Yoda over CGI Yoda which technically goes against that idea of pushing the limits of VFX.

    What I liked:

Rey and Ren's interactions- All the previous good/bad guys in the series have had a long history together. I thought this was a perfect way to take two characters who have next to no relationship and give them an idea of how their minds work. This was probably the strongest part of the film to me, and maybe the most important leading into ep 9.

Luke dying- They are all going to have to die. Luke really needed to. As much as I love having him in the film, too much focus was on him. Ren spent the vast majority of both films trying to find him. They wanted to make these films pave the way for a new generation, and so I think for ep9 to finish that off, he had to be out of the way.

Basically everything that happened on the island- I recognize that if Lucas had actually continued the films a long ass time ago, that things would have completely played out differently. But he didn't. And we were facing not only a huge ass time gap where the characters were basically doing nothing, we have actors who are old as shit and can barely do anything. I think it was a smart solve for him to have gone into hiding giving up the force. It also makes sense that him being hunted has a lot to do with the fear of what he might do from being so legendary.

Btw, I also thought that was a nice touch and a wake up call to the fans, as even discussed in this thread. He's legendary to the fans. In reality, he got old.

Training was also reminiscent of the way Yoda trained Luke. A lot of waiting around with lessons that make little sense at the time.

Snoke dying-Admittedly I kinda like that it happened just because it pissed fans off so much. No, we didn't need his backstory in the main line film. Shit was three hours long, I don't care about what feelings baddy emperor got hurt decades ago. Palpatine had no back story and didn't need one. The only reason we got that was because people wanted Vader's backstory and that was naturally going to come with it. Put that extra stuff in a comic book or cartoon. Not in a film that really isn't about him.

Leia's force pull-I know a lot of people hated it. I think for some people the supposed death was a lot more heavy due to Fisher dying in irl and kinda wanted this to be Leia's death as a bit of catharsis. Perhaps if she were still alive people would be more accepting what happened here. With that in mind, I liked it only because Leia has done little in the past two films. She was always praised as being this strong female characters who gave no fucks, and now was a big worry-wart, so it was cool for me to see something unexpected from her.

Porgs-Fuck the haters, I love the cute animal shit in SW. Hell, I loved the Ewok movies.

Poe's decent- This shit was amazing. I feel a lot of this movie was trying to show that the SW universe was not always going to follow what used to happen. C3PO was always going off that chances of survival is like a fucking million to one and yet they always turn out fine. I think this is to try and make Poe a little more cautious than a crazy hothead and get a better feeling that his actions have severe consequences.

BB8 vs. BB9E BB-H8-They could have done two hours of that shit and I would have loved it.

    Things I didn't like:

Finn/Rose thing-I feel like Abrams was setting up Finn and Rey to be together (Yes I know, Jedi's shouldn't fall in love, yadda yadda, but this series is trying to change and break the rules as said by Ren.) And it seems like Johnson was on board with that for the first half of the film, then suddendly changed his mind towards the end. It seems Finn is conflicted by the end of the film and this just leaves this pseudo love triangle in a shitty place. If he picks Rose I'm going to be pissed. If he picks Rey then Rose would have lost fucking everything, and that's a shit thing to do to that character.

Only solution: Make him chose Rey and Rose because the next Sith. There's a fucked up turn of events.

Knights of Ren: Where the fuck are they?

Rey's parents: Ok, I actually like the answer that she comes from nobody. It made sense. Vader being Luke's father was a huge shock, they wanted to shock the audience with this, too. Too many fan theories made this answer almost inevitable. With that being said, it's too plot-holy. They made such a big deal with her visions, and her holding Luke's lightsaber etc. etc. It just simply doesn't fit with the flow of the first film. I don't think it's what Abrams had in mind, and I expect he's going to twist it into being some shit that the junk traders found her as a baby and raised her for 2-3 years before selling her. Otherwise this was just a fail execution.

Casino bit: Like others, I thought this was way too long. Should have been 1-2 scenes at most. I think this should get improved in the next film now that they're all in one spot.

Yoda/Luke talk about the future: There is one small thing that really bothers me. Yoda tells Luke that they can't save Ren, but they must save Rey. Then Luke goes to Ren instead. Seemed a weird conversation to have, idk. Maybe the idea is that Luke can better advise her as a ghost? I just found that really weird.

Having two directors-This was probably where most problems happened. I think there was a little faltering on consistency. It definitely would have been better to have Abrams do all three. Hopefully, he can wrap things up well in the next one.

    Think that's about it.

Still waiting for the amazing standards y'all are holding Star Wars to to be justified in some way. All these movies have poor pacing, bad dialogue, campiness, the works - this one did practically nothing different from what ESB did. I guess Casino Night Zone went on too long compared to Sky Sanctuary Zone. I think I'm lucky in that I didn't watch Star Wars until much later - I got no nostalgia for this garbage, it's wizards and robots having laser swordfights and spaceship dogfights in space, if you go in wanting more of course you're gonna have a bad time.

At least AG's criticism seems to be that it's boring not some nonsense about the plot not making sense or some of the shit I've seen about character decisions or whatever else. If you don't like it because it didn't interest you that's fine, but this movie had everything you could reasonably expect a Star Wars movie to have.
