The rule is the same anywhere on the field - if you catch the ball and immediately go to the ground, you have to retain possession for it to be a completed catch. It is a bit contradictory to the rule that you just have to break the plane of the endzone for a TD, but that's the rule. Originally Posted by AidenCarby
It's dumb as shit but they've called it that way consistently the past few years.
I don't like that rule and I also don't like the rules for drops vs. fumbles where it's basically dictated by how long it has been since you caught it. Plenty of guys catch clean and have it tucked securely immediately only to have it punched out, yet it's still a "drop" because of how little time passed.

He was falling while making the catch, which makes for pretty clear cases of catch or no catch.
