I got my kids Amazon echo dot kids edition with the subscription. It has a great children's book audio library, vast array of kid friendly audio games and plethora of educational materials. So far that echo dot has been primarily used as pokemon theme music player, which is played on repeat 24/7. Now when I log into my amazon prime video I get a ton of pokemon movie recommendations, and I've learned there are a lot of pokemon movies. A lot.

Tinder, Grindr, & OkCupid send personal data to over 100 different advertisers and behavioral profilers.

The Norwegian Consumer Council said it found “serious privacy infringements” in its analysis of how shadowy online ad companies track and profile smartphone users.

The council, a government-funded nonprofit group, commissioned cybersecurity company Mnemonic to study 10 Android mobile apps. It found that the apps sent user data to at least 135 different third party services involved in advertising or behavioral profiling.

The council took action against some of the companies it examined, filing formal complaints with Norway’s data protection authority against Grindr, Twitter-owned mobile app advertising platform MoPub and four ad tech companies. Grindr sent data including users’ GPS location, age and gender to the other companies, the council said.

I usually assume that everything is collecting my data even if it doesn't explicitly tell me so.

As a general rule, if the app is free, the user is the product.

And then display it to other people who are doing the same thing! The gall!

(Seriously though, you going to be selling the stuff to make ends meet/dosh?)

Amazon's Ring camera/app sends user's data to a variety of third-parties and only one of which Amazon mentions in their privacy statement.

The five companies identified as receiving information were:
    • Facebook, via its Graph API - each user's time zone, device model and screen resolution and a unique identifier
    • Branch, which describes itself as a deep-linking platform - a number of unique identifiers, as well as each user's IP address, device model and screen resolution
    • AppsFlyer, a big data company - a range of information, including sensor data related to the magnetometer, gyroscope and accelerometer on users' phones
    • MixPanel - the most information, including users' full names, email addresses, device information and app settings
    • Google-owned Crashalytics - an amount of customer data "yet to be determined"

Out of these, only MixPanel is mentioned in Ring's privacy notice, along with Google Analytics, HotJar and Optimizely.

Sure, but who is downloading that? Probably someone who wants to apply to the FBI...and you gonna give away those rights anyway during the process. Really it's just streamlining the process.

Zoom transfers data through China's internet opening the risk to espionage and uses a weaker form of encryption than they claim.

A team at The Citizen Lab found that Zoom was using a non-standard type of encryption, and transmitting information through China.

Until recently, Zoom was used mainly by large businesses for video conference calls. But the explosion in users during the coronavirus pandemic has created "a new gold rush for cyber-spies", The Citizen Lab's report said.

It warned that Zoom "may not be suitable" for:
    • Governments and businesses worried about espionage
    • Healthcare providers handling sensitive patient information
    • Activists, lawyers and journalists working on sensitive topics

"During multiple test calls in North America, we observed keys for encrypting and decrypting meetings transmitted to servers in Beijing, China," the report said.

The report also pointed to the strong involvement of Chinese firms in the company. Zoom has its headquarters in the US, but has about 700 employees across three companies in mainland China working on the app's development.

In some places, it tells users that it uses "end-to-end" encryption - the gold standard for secure messaging, which makes it impossible for the service, or any other middlemen, to access data. In its documentation, Zoom has said it uses a type of encryption called AES-256.

But the researchers said this is not true. Instead, Zoom has "rolled their own" encryption - using a variant of something called AES-128 in "ECB mode".

The report also says that Zoom does not use end-to-end encryption "as most people understand the term". Instead, it uses "transport" encryption between devices and servers.

"Because Zoom does not implement true end-to-end encryption, they have the theoretical ability to decrypt and monitor Zoom calls," the report said.

Wow. How long has Zoom been around? You know they created this program just to do this.

Our office has been using it for a few years at least. Mostly used for webinars and inter-office meetings with other state offices. We recently rolled out an update that defaults some security settings to prevent "break-ins", but we never had an issue with it prior to that.

Zoom reveals that they're monitoring video and audio feeds.

Zoom says that the platform uses 'machine learning' to identify accounts in violation of its policies — though it has remained vague about its methods for identifying offending users and content.

"We encourage users to report suspected violations of our policies, and we use a mix of tools, including machine learning, to proactively identify accounts that may be in violation," a spokesperson for Zoom told Rolling Stone.

While Zoom executives did not respond to the outlet's questions about the specifics of the machine-learning tools or how the platform might be alerted to nudity and pornographic content, a spokesperson did add that the company will take a "number of actions" against people found to be in violation of the specified acceptable use.
