Logan Paul controversy helps push YouTube into changing their Monetization Requirements

The first part of the new strategy involves a stricter requirement that publishers must fulfil before they can make money from their uploads.

Clips will no longer have adverts attached unless the publisher meets two criteria - that they have:

• at least 1,000 subscribers
• more than 4,000 hours of their content viewed by others within the past 12 months

The second part of the effort focuses on the Google Preferred program.

This lets brands pay extra to attach their adverts to the top 5% of videos most popular with 18- to 34-year-olds.

Until now, the process was automated.

But YouTube said it would manually review all relevant content by the end of March.

I've been thinking of getting into the broadcasting game. mostly because it's shit I would do anyway and why not let people watch and/or possibly get some amount of money out of it. this would push me hard into twitch for sure

Aren't VoDs already loaded with ads already? I heard reports that Twitch auto-inserts ads every 15 minutes in VoDs. Not sure about uploaded content. I could test that out to see how many ads I see since one guy I follow does upload videos on twitch parallel to YouTube.

Also a limitation of Twitch - some broadcasters paywall their VoDs behind subscriptions. There are at least a few big names I know that would like to have a choice in which content is hidden behind the subscription wall (ex. Podcasts & shows) and which are free to view (normal gaming streams)

But non-Partners don't receive money from ads, and Partners don't receive much, if anything, from ads.

Affiliates only receive money from bits and subs.

Twitch today announced a partnership with Disney Digital Content. Bringing over some of the most popular online personalities like Markiplier over to create exclusive content. Twitch also launched new creator software aimed at helping users create and edit pre-recorded content, rather than relying on the live broadcast that Twitch is primarily known for.

I think this was in the wings for a while with VoD casts (now called Reruns) and pre-recorded content (dubbed Premiere). But I think yesterday's YT shithole situation was the big green button to launch it.

Guy in VR Chat has a full on seizure (he's okay), in the immediate aftermath the guy recording asks him if he has permission to upload it. Seizure guy agrees. Uploader monetizes the video.


Some people are saying his permission to upload and monetize, despite being verbal, wasn't made in good faith due to his confused state after coming out of the seizure.

Despite that bit of questionable behavior, it is a fascinating video and I was really pleasantly surprised how fast the people in the chat came together the moment they realized something was wrong.

Yeah, I'm of the opinion consent after a seizure is not actually consent. Coworker recently had one, and she couldn't give directions to her own house (she's lived in her whole life) after being taken to the hospital, checked, released, and then driven home several hours later.
