Graphics Card Shortages - Damn Cryptominers!!

Guess I picked a really hard time to build my new gaming pc - for several months the market for gaming GPUs has been in short supply due to the inflation in price of most cryptocurrency markets. The only ones available are the special models that have much higher prices.

What a pain in the ass. I may have to go to PAX East this year just to get my hands on one at a booth. If anyone happens to see this card in stock anywhere at its normal list price ($489-519) let me know ASAP.

For sure. Right now it's bananas. My Micro Center usually would carry anywhere from 175-225 cards in stock. Right now? 36. I'm using a Zotac Amp! Extreme GTX 1070 right now that I bought for $240 w/tax open box, but right now there is a listing on Amazon for $840. Might as well test the waters. Even the model of EVGA GTX 970 I have is going for $330.

If I have a couple older radeon cards, can I dump them in to a bare-bones rig and get a slow mine going? As long as I'm willing to accept a slower return?

If mining off of GPU I want to say the card needs to be 3GB Vram. I tried to mine using a GTX 1050 2GB but it wouldn't work. Maybe because it was Nvidia? I'm not sure. My thing is, how much are the cards selling for vs potential mining profit. I still could do that with my 1070. I'm not familiar with the service of Zotac's RMA process if needed to use.
