That was really lame
That was really lame
I knew I was playing with fire when I started to get excited for no reason. :'(
Yeah same. Def got my hopes up
The refriender and the weird Malboro site has pretty high production value for a game in maintenance mode.
And given all the advertising of late I really thought there would be something.
As a long time FFXI player since the beta, I can't overstate how the phrase: "I expect nothing and I'm still let down" sums up the entirety of the last 16 years of FFXI.
They could have rick rolled that announcement as a means to gauge interest?
i was even more hyped because of the campaign name for december "rousing return". i mean, come on. that's just cruel to put a name like that on the same month of the fanfest.
i still suspect that they're going to do a remake of ffxi though. why? because:
1. it's still profitable after all this time - that suggests there's still good demand for such an MMORPG, despite the lure of ffxiv. (lol) that a 16 year old game on directx for ps2 can still have such returns means that it would probably be a good investment to revitalize it, luring in plenty of new customers. as it is, ffxi plays so differently from ffxiv that they're not likely to poach too much customers, especially since ffxiv tends to be a "play new patch and unsubscribe game" anyways.
2. it's a named FF. letting it die seems like a bad move, especially when they've been working at bringing back all the old FF games in some form or another on steam. (i'm still waiting on I and II though... )
and, most importantly, 3. there's already a ton of HD assets for the game already made. practically every FFXI monster seems to be in FFXIV now, so there's the monster's already done. probably some of the ffxiv assets can be used or modified too, since the ffxiv races are fairly similiar to the ffxi ones. on top of that, there's already all the story written, music composed, and battle systems already created - they just pretty much need to be copy pastad, recomposed in better quality (assuming they don't already have such), and recoded with maybe the loot/systems tweaked. sure there's still a lot of coding to be done and some assets to be remade or modified... but a ton of the hard work is already DONE. it wouldn't cost nearly as much as making a new FF game from scratch, so they'd get a return on their investment even sooner.
bonus 4. eureka. it feels like they're trying to whet ffxiv players appettites for ffxi and hitting us with nostalgia bombs. granted ffxiv is one giant nostalgia bomb, but it seems suspicious to me. :D
I’d come back so hard with a new abysses expansion. Raise cap to 119, nuke everything like they did at 75, HERE WE GO
With Dots, there. When you're maybe paying a dozen people to maintain servers and shill out what minimal content they have been, 50k players spread out over all the servers or whatever is still a sustainable game.
current guesses based on a source is they have 3 people dedicated to ffxi and about 6 other people who are mainly working on ff14 but spend some time on ffxi as well.
no plans to remake this game, would have leaked.
there are also no longer and special task force investigations, so bot away. http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/rule/specialtask.html

do the math yourself on gil per character, numbers are being artificially inflated to not believable levels. dunno if you can really blame them though, game is ancient and getting it onto a PC toolkit would be hard, plus there's virtually no new interest. mostly ffxi players are just people who can't let go
To be sure, I'd be all about it. An honest to god remake would be pretty cool. But there's no shortage of reasons that will never happen. The best anyone can hope for is this slow trickle of minor content until they pull the plug in 5 years
Was thinking this was the 5th for some reason and came looking for info. Wow...what a disappointment.
Please be excited.
FFXI had a ton of shortcomings and a lot of creative ways they had to fenangle to overcome those shortcomings and limitations. That said, the current MMO market wouldn't tolerate a new everquest style MMO like FFXI. While we relish in the open world dungeons, we must remember how shitty it was to exp to 75 back in 2003-2007 without a duty finder and having to find a camp, which was crowed and you gained suboptimal exp. There's no shortage of reasons why FFXI couldn't be remade the same way. If they remade it, it would have all the bells and whistles of a modern MMO, duty finder, mounts, teleports, etc and then it ceases to be FFXI. FFXI didn't usde a GCD for actions, it was menu based. Mages had like 130+ spells, of which fewer than 20 were useful. FFXI wasn't intended to be gear heavy but players VERY early exploited macros to change gear and create sets for every action. This wasn't originally intended, but was allowed and later used by SE to start pumping out niche gear. Now in XIV, gear is barebones stats with no interesting traits...because people would just figure out the best anyway and just use that, also gear swapping fucks with aesthetic of the game with having to re-draw your character model every second for all the pre-cast/mid-cast/post-cast sets for every skill lol.
The numbers they put out were always bullshit, nothing changed.
It's just obvious enough for you to notice now.
I recall reading somewhere this year that XI had six active developers on it (one of the XIV live letters perhaps since YoshiP heads the MMO division at SE?). Whether they were fulltime or floaters though, no idea.
I still feel bad for whoever they hired during SoA to fix the PS2 client being absolutely broken though, since it took them about a year and three attempts at re-arranging/budgeting its memory allocation to address the 1-frame-per-15-seconds bug when combat got heavy.
I have no idea why you're bolding something and pretending the two are mutually exclusive? usually when someone can't let go of something it's still something they want and or enjoy. you've grown so little over the years. mostly ffxi players say "oh the game is so great it's come so far." when complimenting things that it did not have but other games did have at it's inception, while on the other hand they say "man i just couldnt get into game x y z" after playing it for a short amount of time. this usually leads to a nonsensical stance that can only really point to people being unable to let go. you, especially, knock on the game from the 03-2010 time period excessively, yet for some reason you played through it all and here you are today.
if you've got a link to the article saying they have 6 "Developers" working exclusively on ffxi i'd love to read that.
I bolded it because you are apparently placing the majority of people who still enjoy the game into a negative light with the "can't let go." Unless you can explain that part, how is it they can't let go if they are paying for a service they enjoy? Is that a bad thing in your opinion?
I don't "knock on the game" from that time period. I've made posts in their respective threads over the years but I've never actively created threads or forced my opinion when it wasn't asked for or encouraged.
As far as the "you've grown so little" I have no idea what you're talking about, nor do I know who you even are lol.
