We work on some of these "net zero" projects in NYC where they do this kind of thing. Rainwater collection systems for toilets, solar and wind for electricity, geothermal wells for heating. Kinda cool. They don't end up net zero, though.

I'd love to see about adding some solar collectors or geothermal wells to my property but it's quite expensive to set up around here. It'd be a boon long term, but unfortunately I don't have the funds to do it at the moment.

Solar is good and all, but the challenge is energy storage when the sun goes down. Some companies like Tesla are pushing for Powerwalls, p much a wall with a battery array, but still no practical solution exists for cheap scale-able energy storage.
