That's gonna happen until a viable alternative actually exists. Whether or not that's possible, much like a competitor to Twitch or Youtube, is another story.

So just an fyi for anyone on Android in regards to the inevitable death of third party apps at the end of the month, you can use Revanced to remove advertisements from the official app. Works for a bunch of other apps too
https://github.com/revanced
Never used an app for Reddit. That said, if they kill Old Reddit then I'm out.
I just use Brave browser on Android. Nearly the same as Chrome but comes with an AdBlock that works. Doesn't get rid of those 'promoted' posts on Reddit, but absolutely works on YouTube for ads there
Revanced will kill the promoted posts if you're using the official app which uh.. will be the only app in a few weeks.
It's hilarious last night I was up when /r/gaming came back and they started a poll to see if they should stay shut down or not, and it was overwhelmingly for shut down.
This morning after I get up the response is now overwhelmingly "Who cares you are powerless just give us the sub"
Really shows the difference between people who just want Reddit to burn off worktime hours and those who "care" about internet culture.
When r/NBA got polled about shutting down I think I saw that only like 5% of the sub even bothered to respond to the poll.
Capitalism wins because the market is full of too many stupid and lazy people
That's the thing, if I have to jump through hoops to use the shitty official app I'm just going to stop browsing it on my phone which is about 75% of my time on reddit. That's about as much effect as I can have on them. I voted to keep subreddits indefinitely closed wherever I had the choice but that feels largely meaningless if only a tiny fraction of the subs do it.
The only thing that really bothers me with the official app versus what I've been using for years (Relay) is the sponsored posts, and I can mod those out of the apk. Having not even looked at the official app for years it's really not that bad right now. Certainly not the terminal cancer this discourse would make one believe.
It's basically the same shit that's allowed microtransactions to fuck modern gaming. No matter how well-meaning or correct you may be on the issue, the greedy and impatient will just ruin it for everyone else, which just encourages the hosts to lean in further.
Aren't there whales to fuck us over with microtransactions in games? I wonder what % of a gaming population actually makes the big purchases vs how much is bought.
Devs design for the whales and there is legit psychological study to optimizing that, but you still have the guppies rationalizing things away as a cup of coffee, a night at the movies, a lunch or two, and so on, further with the "It's just cosmetics!" cop out. When suddenly what used to be a $50-60 one-time cost game is now costing them $150+ a year.
It's just like crossing the picket line. We lose power when people break ranks.

Unlike a picket line, there's no physical manifestation to hammer home the protest, either. Ironically, it's the same logic that makes the right's obsession with cancel culture just pissing in the wind, because if some celebrity or comedian of their kin does wind up getting a slap, it's not the faceless masses making the call. It's just an exec or committee unilaterally making the call with profit as their priority.
The recent Target or Bud Light boycotts are a bit of an anomaly, but I'd argue that's more fueled by our nation's underlying hatred issues than something more benign like video game entertainment. However, there aren't exactly a shortage of people whining about games going woke, either, confusing that for the drop of quality that reinforces crunch culture and the MTX paradigm.
When I played FFBE I would pay a guy like $100 every time I wanted to pull from a banner and he would get me like $1000 worth of pulls, plus he had a 3rd party app that let me grind trust rewards while not playing the game. Whale results at dolphin prices, learn to Jewish better.
