    They got something along the lines of traits with the cross role abilities. The problem is they're less about augmenting your playstyle and more 'check in the boxes' when excounters have mechanics.

    My Melee Priority: Diversion > Second Wind > Bloodbath > Invigorate > Goad

    Boss not omni directional? Probably gonna use True North at some point.

    Boss does a knockback? You're bringing Arm's Length.

    Little too much damage coming from the boss? Equip Feint.

    Crutch and Leg Sweep are useless.

    The only good thing about this system when compared to wow is I can change my cross-roles as long as I'm not incombat without having to use a consumable.

    Legendaries (Legion types) can stay in wow. As can talent trees inside artifact weapons that require an obscene amount of endless post-game grinding to continue to unlock.

    Well Legedaries just turned into Meritable weapons, which, yeah, turned into a super grind. Its why I'm not a fan of bringing back flat merits.

    Put the choices inside the job as you level, not at the end with a ferocious grind.

    Nah when I say legendaries I meant the random legendary rarity gear that would drop as you did shit. Some of them were straight up shit while other's increases your spec's DPS by a good 20%.

    Like you were guaranteed one for your spec but it was a crap shot whether it'd actually make your life better/class more powerful or just be a waste of an inventory slot (And chance at a good drop) because this shit was designed to drop every so often randomly (At least at Legion launch).

    Yes talents. Give everyone the illusion of choice until people on Reddit figure out mathematically the most optimal builds per job and the "depth" is shattered. Then everyone is pigeonholed into the same build for their class, kicked from groups or forced to respec (if available).

    As it stands now there are 4 jobs in FFXIV. Healer, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, and Tank. All the "classes" we have could be thought of as "builds". Whereas Scholar is a Shield healer, MNK/NIN are fast GCD melee, DRG is slow GCD but has movement skills, etc. If you actually think of FFXIV jobs within each "role" less as jobs with unique shit like FFXI and more like branches of the same role, it makes more sense. But yeah, talent tree WITHIN a job would never fly because people will simply math out the best options, like merit points in FFXI.

    We have plenty of passives, its jut now they're baked into the job and not shown. Like do you want a trait that adds slashing debuff on mobs to WAR's weapon skill? Cuz they could dissociate it from the skill and add it back in via a fucking trait gained 10 levels later. They also buffed Heavy Thrust duration from what 21 to 30 seconds---they could have made that a trait (Heavier Thrust?), or Chaos Thrust's duration. Any time they buff a skill's duration or damage they could have reflected it as a skill (cuz most of 2.x's traits were simply increases to damage or CD reductions). How about the 25% proc chance of Scatter procing Enhanced Scatter? Again, it's baked into the skill but it TOTALLY could have been a trait added 15 levels later! We have passives and traits they're just included in the kit already. Elusive is a positional move but it also cuts enmity in half. Spine Shatter Dive does damage and moves you and grants mirage dive stack, but it also stuns! That's like 2 or 3 baked in traits!

    Then you make content different enough that one talent tree wouldn't be able to cover all of them. Going by your example of thinking of jobs as different talent specs of a role, certain content would be more friendly to magic range than melee, other content to shield healing as opposed to raw healing power.

    SE did go that route before but since they want to include all jobs in content, especially with duty finder choosing random jobs of a certain role, they can't. So being able to play a job but spec for the content would be a better route unless they just completely change how jobs are leveled and geared.

    Hang on, back it up there buddy. You're asking for a talent tree system, and then you're expecting square to know which talent trees are god like or observe what people do and then adjust content to go against it so they have to play a different way. Yeah that aint going to happen. FF14 is designed in mind that you can clear any content with any standardized setup (2 tank, 2 heal, 2 melee, 2 range), that is how all their content is designed and if it cannot be completed with that basic setup in mind then it wouldn't fly past QA and game testers.

    Have we forgotten about the epic 25 attribute points you could allocate and spend 10k GC credits to redistribute. Those poor fuckers that wanted to play SMN and SCH back then lol.
