20/year is pretty good, but I question only NES games at launch.

Will see how it develops over the first few months. Not the best start, but not terrible.

The $35/year plan that you can share with 7 people is pretty great for people that can just split the cost of it.

I'm not really someone that plays games online much, so I'm not really sure how much online I'd be paying for, maybe just Pokemon depending on how crazy they get with that game's online.

edit: But yeah, if this is their only option for backing up saves, that is really annoying. I'd still like to backup saves some other way besides just paying for online and cloud saves. =/

Nintendo’s upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service is an affordable, multi-featured paid service that lets users enjoy online play for compatible Nintendo Switch games, access classic NES games with added online functionality, back up save data for most games and use additional features for the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app that will enhance the online experience for compatible games.

Nintendo revealed more information about Nintendo Switch Online, including pricing, Save Data Cloud backup and additional details about the classic NES games subscribers will be able to play when it launches in September.

    • U.S. Pricing: Various price points offer a variety of affordable options for different players.

    Individual memberships:

    - One month: $3.99

    - Three months: $7.99

    - 12 months: $19.99

    Family membership (12 months): $34.99

With a family membership, up to eight Nintendo Account holders will be able to use the Nintendo Switch Online service, even on different systems.

    • Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online: Subscribers will have access to NES – Nintendo Switch Online, a compilation of classic NES games. The collection will initially include 20 games, with more added on a regular basis. At launch, previously announced games Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario and Super Mario Bros. 3 will be joined by Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Soccer, Super Mario Bros. and Tennis. An additional 10 launch games will be announced in the future.

For the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy these classic NES games online. Depending on the game, players can engage in online competitive or co-op multiplayer, or take turns controlling the action. Friends can even watch each other play single-player games online, and “pass the controller” at any time. Every classic NES game will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. It will also be possible to play these games offline.

    • Save Data Cloud Backup: By using Nintendo Switch Online, a backup of Nintendo Switch save data for most Nintendo Switch games will be stored online for easy access. This is great for people who want to retrieve their data if they lose, break or purchase an additional Nintendo Switch system.

    • Online Play: A Nintendo Switch Online membership will be needed to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many current and upcoming Nintendo Switch games, such as Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Mario Tennis Aces and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido.

    • Nintendo Switch Online App: The Nintendo Switch Online smartphone application can be used to enhance the online experience for compatible games through voice chat and other features.

Still worried that isn't going to stop the wave of hackers on a completely vulnerable console. They've had no experience with dealing with them under a paid environment and that is becoming an expectation. They can't charge and allow the same shit that happened with the Wii/U/3DS to go on. It got a pass because they were free.

    Hope they're ready.

Might be the reason for this, honestly.

They may move (in addition to a "fixed" new switch model) towards a more a la carte approach like Sega has done. So if you want to play FF6 on Switch, you'll need Square Enix's online service while Nintendo titles will be more freely available under their online service.

While I loathe giving SE more money to friviously spend without purpose, the bulk of Nintendo's classic titles either fall under their control or 3rd parties will allow them to use it on their behalf while not wanting to invest in such an infrastructure quite yet. "Virtual Console" as a brand may be dead, but if this is done smart with a push more toward value add-ins (like online play) instead of 29.99 for Mario 64 on the Switch then I think it is a positive step.

    Additionally, rumor time!

A gamefaqs leak was posted 5 days ago and ~3 days before the Switch Online info was revealed.

    Spoilered for huge:
    Spoiler: show
-Nintendo’s releasing details about their Online Service on May 7th.

-Service goes live on September 24th.

-Service offers dedicated voice chat through an existing chat service, Discord being the most popular choice, exclusive Eshop discounts, and a Games With Gold/PlayStation Plus like Service where retro games are given to people every month and are allowed to keep the games as long as they have the service.

-Nintendo is ditching the Virtual Console brand and replacing it with ‘Nintendo Classics’. Games offered through this are much cheaper than they were before and is going to launch with NES and GBA games in August with SNES and N64 games being made available late 2018/ early 2019.

-Nintendo E3 Presentation is currently 36 minutes long and focuses only on Switch titles with Treehouse being used to announce and show 3DS titles.

-The first reveal is of the Spyro trilogy coming to Switch, though there’s a reason they’ve been waiting to reveal it.

-Fire Emblem is next and the title for it is ‘Lustrous Daybreak’. Coming holiday this year.

-Yoshi is next, now subtitled Flipped Around and features the same Amiibo functionality as Wooly World. Releases in August.

-New Paper Mario game is next and is not being developed by Intelligent Systems. Goes back to the traditional partner style gameplay but still heavily features the character limitations imposed for Sticker Star and Color Splash. Coming 2019.

-Mario Odyssey DLC is next. Luigi is being released that day as a playable character and adds 70 unique moons to the game. Wario and Waluigi are also being made playable characters with 70 moons each as well. No tentative release date on the other two characters, but they are being made playable at the show floor.

-Activision makes some announcements. Crash Bandicoot Amiibo is being made that adds harder time trials to the N’Sane trilogy and is teased to have some kind of functionality with Spyro trilogy.

-Black Ops 4 Battle Royale is coming to Switch with crossplay with PC and Xbox, regular Black Ops 4 is not coming to Switch.

-Sega reveals their Sega Ages line for the west and two of the games they’re releasing under it are the first two Sonic Adventure games.

-Super Sonic Racing is revealed and takes inspiration from Sonic R with some characters like Sonic running on their own while characters like Tails use vehicles. Some kind of Nintendo exclusive content is teased for the game as well.

-Next is a Metroid Prime 4 gameplay trailer. Coming 2019.

-Pokémon for Switch is revealed. It’s a new take on Red and Blue and features graphics that are midway between Sun/Moon and Pokken.

-Five Nights at Freddy’s is coming to Switch, though reports are coming in that content may have been censored on Scott Cawthon’s end, not enforced by Nintendo. Coming out in the fall.

-Two trailers for Smash Bros for Switch are the last things. One reveals Captain Toad, the other reveals Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, this is why they’ve been quiet about the Switch version of the trilogy. Gameplay is shown and is a mix of Smash 4 and Melee, being very colorful yet detailed. Coming out September alongside the Online Service.

-Ice Climbers are set to be revealed during the Treehouse Live.

We may have a genuine Nintendo E3 leak, though the Fire Emblem title still gives me pause as do the Smash additions. They just don't seem to fit quite right (the 3rd party ones, Toad is a very obvious addition).

The most plausibe rumor, honestly, is Pokemon Switch being the long thought revamp of Red/Blue. Too many factors and reasons to revisit Kanto's original titles for story and historical reasons.

Leak was just outed on gamefaqs/4chan as someone getting lucky with the date guess for Switch Online and made the rest up.

Thats kind of almost too lucky, but broken clock etc etc. Could be someone saving their job too...back to waiting.

Really hope the Nintendo Classics thing is true. Cheaper VC titles sounds great rather than spending $15 on the same N64 game that I've bought 3 or 4 times. Can finally live the dream of the real Paper Mario on a handheld. Really hoping Gamecube games come eventually too.

Not gonna get my hopes up tho. The Switch has some of the most rampant fake rumors I've ever seen for a console.

edit: so since May 7th already passed and Nintendo announced their details for the online service, this gets a tiny bit of credence. Nintendo Classics exists, and the online service gives access to 20 titles at launch in September. Also adds cloud saving and will cost a mere $20/year.

Comes with the territory of being oddly popular in comparison to their last few consoles.

"perfect for switch" is a meme.

After World, going to back to an older-style Monster Hunter seems like a big ask.

Official Adjustable Charging Stand, Coming July 13th, $19.99
Launching on July 13 at a suggested retail price of $19.99, a new adjustable charging stand for the Nintendo Switch system makes playing in Tabletop mode easier than ever. With a handy port for an AC adapter on the side, the adjustable charging stand allows the Nintendo Switch system to be charging while in Tabletop mode, enabling longer play sessions.

The angle of the stand can also be adjusted to create the best viewing angle for different environments.

Nintendo Switch can be played in three modes: TV mode, Handheld mode and Tabletop mode. Tabletop mode lets players set up the Nintendo Switch system to play games on the go without the need for a TV. The compact and sturdy stand will work with any flat surface, like a tray table on an airplane or a dorm room desk. While not required, the adjustable charging stand makes playing in Tabletop mode more convenient.
