I mean, what was their alternative?

In terms of controls, when an engine fails the plane starts yawing and rolling towards the failed engine due to asymmetric thrust, forcing pilots to constantly counter this by opposite rudder/aileron. Modern jet aircraft have powered controls so this is not really that difficult.
Limits like Vmca (minimum speed in air) are determined under one engine inoperative conditions with a good bit of safety margin. Pilots are also trained for the worst conditions.
777 are certified to fly over 300 minutes w/ one engine inoperative, so in cruise it is also not a big deal even if you lose it in the middle of the ocean.
This United Airlines case made it to the news because it is an uncontained engine failure situation which is more serious than a contained one. The engine could've damaged other parts of the plane as it loses its structural integrity.

Probably... not...This photo shows the MV Ever Given near Hamburg, Germany on July 29, 2020. The Ever Given, a cargo container ship that's among the largest in the world, has turned sideways and blocked all traffic in Egypt's Suez Canal, officials said Wednesday, March 24, 2021, threatening to disrupt a global shipping system already strained by the coronavirus pandemic. Vessels are changing course to the long route around Africa, except min. week delay for every cargo and reduced capacity for Asia - Europe trade.
Also, rescue won't be easy...
