The complaints about the laptop shouldn't matter for your Dad since he's not a gamer. The problems are how the other components hamstring the Ryzen processor which could otherwise make it a light gamer on the Vega integrated.

Edit: just found out this is a slightly different (and lower) model than what was on Amazon. It doesn't have a low pressure setting (can't do yogurt) and there are some other minor features it doesn't have.

Final edit: Amazon has price-matched walmart on the identical model. $50.

Update on laptop for my father. My nephew just graduated from college and got a job where they bought him a brand new laptop so he is giving his old one to my dad since he doesn't need it anymore. Yay nephew for saving the day.

Not sure what laptop it is I think it is a macbook pro probably 2012 or 2013 era with the super drive built in. Plenty for my dad after I clean it up for him.

That's perfect for a writer. Probably better than any cheap options you'd have seen via Chromebook or low-end Windows-based laptop.
