I live in California just a couple hours south of the Bay area. Also cell towers have automatic generators that kick in when the power goes out. I have never lost cell coverage during a power outage before. Most infrastructure in areas are prepared for storms even if they don't regularly get them. Gas stations, stores, restaurants etc. on the other hand probably are not.

Edit: food spoilage is an issue regardless and that really sucks.

North bay here in an area that doesn't ever get power knocked out by a storm. Ever. Back up generators only last for a few hours and then they need people to be able to go service them...it's being reported that might not be guaranteed and well lets just say the streets are packed right now. People around here jamming up the stores like mad lads already. I can personally speak for losing cell reception during the fires happened even when in areas where the fire wasn't when they cut power to nearby areas. Eventually came back but yeah.

Also reading they expecting 40-70 MPH winds which is part of the concern despite it not being that warm but the weather channel says <15MPH <.<. Even national weather service has wind speeds that low with gusts only going up to 38 and that's only tomorrow night and Thursday before night. not tonight not 5 days from now. Feels like some kind of gamesmanship going on here

Hijacking with a story about a similar situation.

The last company I worked for cut a partner out. He wasn't originally a partner, but had worked a deal when he was hired where he'd make a percentage of what he brings in and it was cheaper to make him a partner after some time.

He caused a huge scene because he wasn't able to make it to a company dinner, saying everyone ate on his dollar and he wasn't even there (I never actually went to these dinners anyway). Started pitching a fit every chance he got. After a few days, he started asking employees if they'd come with him to start a new company in the same field.

Word got back to the original owner and apparently the guy had some clause in his contract that he was not allowed to poach employees. He was also not allowed to start a competing business within the area in (x) years from parting ways so he fucked himself over on two of his contract terms.

It was nasty when it went down. The owner and partner were screaming at each other in the office hallways. The partner went outside, still screaming, threatening to sue, call some people, etc. The owner cut the guy a layoff check and sent his son down to hand it over to the partner (the son is like 6'-8" and works out regularly). Son handed the check over to the partner and the partner threw it back in his face telling him to fuck off. We're all at the windows watching this at this point. The son just said "come on man, don't do it like this" and handed him the check again. The partner ripped up the check, threw it in the son's face, got in his car and sped off.

We had security around the office and various properties for about 2 weeks. We had to hand in our key fobs so they could change all the programmed locks and then gave out new fobs and new door codes. They changed all the company gas and credit cards as well. Lawyers were brought in and held depositions about the events leading up to and including the parting of ways.

It was intense. The partner is/was actually a piece of shit and an idiot so whatever. He ended up having to move down to the Carolinas or something to find a job. His father is/was one of three partners in a competing company, but even they didn't want to keep him on after what he did.

Dude basically lost an easy $1M+/year because he wasn't at a company dinner.

Yeah sounds like a big fucking baby. Funny how you assume childish behaviors like that will go away as people age but they really don't.

I have a late 40s boss that gets pissy and feels left out if the staff go to lunch without her. Besides the fact that she is terrible company, are you really shocked that the staff don't want to spend MORE time with the person they report to???

I guess to add. Guy laid off was part of the facility team so I can understand the security. The Sr. Manager who had to let him go (my guess his director told him so) had the decency to escort the guy around to say his goodbyes without the presence of security.

That's not to say that there has never been drama at a layoff. About a few months after we were acquired by big corporate giant, a senior employee was let go and had to be escorted by security in suits after she started trashing her office and yelling at coworkers. Eventually got her in a private car to drive her home. I think they paid for the towing to get her car home as well.

So I got rescheduled to go to an off-site place in Oakland as supposedly we would have a few staff members here. A whole whopping one showed up and she's in a different building then me a d stuck at a cubicle by herself with no one around.

Found out a bunch of staff are now going to a downtown Oakland location, and I can.t really provide much support as I have no admin rights on their machines. Trying to get the girl who is by herself moved there and get myself to a facility a half mile from my apartment or work from home the rest of the week.

And a planned closure of an entire site on the other side of the state. I expect security to be tight around here for the next few weeks.

So one of my favorite restaurants that we go once pretty much every wine weekend we have in Calistoga just closed after being in business for almost 40 years. And the restaurant next to it that was also pretty good has been closed for about a year now still hasn't had anything else come in and replace it. Dammit I need my yummy noms after I stumbling about after too much wine

coworker getting on my case to make coffee if I drink it... which I do and point out. The reason why it's not often is because he throws out any left over at the end of the day and as soon as he gets in he throws out whatever is in there and makes a fresh pot even if he wont drink it and ends up throwing the whole pot out. Meanwhile I wont drink until my late lunch and wont waste any so ONLY make new if it's empty when I go to drink so reheat if anything left.

On PTO today. Sleeping in for once because out late. Fucking work emergency contact system texts and robocalls me at 7:30 am and now I can't go back to sleep.

Then internet/cable is out. And my house smells of smoke - not in a fire evac zone, winds blowing the smoke into the area where air stagnates and dies

Air conditioner at my apartment is busted. Since I live in Florida and it’s still 90 degrees in mid October this is hella annoying. A/C repair guy showed up to check it out today but said he couldn’t do anything to repair it until his boss signed off and it would probably be Monday before he even responded. The fuck.

My wife decided she wants to hang the microwave above the oven, despite the constant flip flopping previously. Can't find the templates anywhere online and I'd have to buy similar ones for like $3 a piece from an online retailer.

So dumb. I have access to a large format printer and could just print them out if there were PDFs of them.

Overtime book was put out for November sometime between yesterday and today. One person took 9 of the fucking days out of 12 available. It's considered common courtesy to let people know so we can share some , ugh. I know you have seven kids to raise but ffs some of us want some too..

Found out via the transfer list that my Sgt. isn't returning. I knew she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and starting radiation , but this sucks
I really respected her and enjoyed working under her too. Nervous about her temporary replacement just because of how manipulative things can be.
