It means he wasn't stupid and knew what the correct move was for his business. There were rumors, as far back as the early 90's, that he was donating to campaigns anonymously; I'm almost positive he recently confirmed some of these. "He knew" doing so publicly would have been the wrong move. It started with rumors that he was funding Democratic Senators and refused to admit it publicly. "He knew" better than to publicize it.

It was the right decision. He is THE sports' figure and has capitalized on it brilliantly.

It wasn't until he got his billion dollars, that he decided to start endorsing or even speaking about anyone involved in politics. Dude is about the cash!
Again, his motives weren't wise, they were for profit. This is the same dude who bullied competitors, friends, and sitting Presidents to their face. This is also the same dude that had a massive gambling problem. To say that he 'knew' to not speak on such things doesn't say anything about his social conscience, it just more evidence to his overall greed as a human being.

MJ wasn't a champion for social issues because MJ didn't give a fuck about anyone but himself. To argue otherwise is just plain dumb.

    Edited wording for clarity

Absolutely. I never argued against that lol. My entire point was that he did what was good for business...

Obssesive gambling isn't good for business. Being a notorious bully isn't good for business, either. MJ still did those things.

Gambling isn't good (or it is very good) for his personal life. His gambling didn't change almost anyone's decision to buy or not buy his brand's products. Openly supporting a Democratic Senator absolutely would have.

The attitude toward bullying back then was also "too bad, get over it, be tougher". It isn't the same today. It wouldn't fly for him today. It did then.
