Looking for some painting advice!

Wife and I recently found out we are expecting, and I'm working on turning a spare room into the nursery. Only roadblock I have, is that the prior homeowners covered an entire wall with some goofy blackboard/chalkboard material. it's coarse as shit and I'm curious to see if I could just primer the shit out of it and paint it, or if I'll need to sand it down as level as I can get it, and then paint? Just curious if any of you experts out there have any experience or suggestions for this blackboard wall. I've never battled one of these before, so if you have any input, I'd appreciate it!

Isn’t there some texturized you could cover the wall with before painting it? That’s fucking weird. I’d ask someone at the department store they’re usually pretty knowledgeable.

thanks lol. I did some vague research and saw a few articles similar to that. This wall is just a bit different it seems. most chalkboard walls seem much more fine and smooth, but this wall is coarse and bumpy as shit. I figured I could throw a few coats of primer on there and paint over it, I was just concerned about the wall sucking up the primer and leaving the weird coarse/grainy texture instead of the smooth finish I'm aiming for

reminds me of the stuff I see at my brother's house lol his wife is a "beachbody coach" and that shit is everywhere

Chances are they used the wrong nap which caused the course texture. I imagine it would sand down pretty easy unless it’s like popcorn ceiling type of texture
