Here's hoping it adheres closer to the D2 Horadrim/Zakarum/etc lore in a darker setting, though doubt it since the series likely will serve as a cloaked marketing device for D3. D3 story was a massive disappointment for me.

While true, something can be good and still not be to your personal tastes. I'm saying this will be my taste if it doesn't suck :D

I'd rather it be based off D2/extended lore as well, D3 story was mostly pretty bad, but I think it's mostly because of cheesy obvious writing.
And surely they know by now that no one liked Leah.

As I said on the D3 boards yesterday, I hope the take is closer to Castlevania than it was Death Note in terms of adaptation.

Personal speculation, the series will start out with Leoric and his family moving to Tristram, further covering the events of Lazarus corrupting him and eventually death at the hands of Lachdanan. Fast forward a few years to the Skeleton King arising and wreaking havoc, with the now grown Adrian and a few other knights (conveniently resembling various game classes) and probably Adria descending into the cathedral to take him out, further learn of Lazarus' machinations, and ending with the defeat of Diablo and Adrian basically sacrificing himself by embedding the soulstone within himself.

If I'm being honest, D2's plot alone doesn't really lend itself well to a standalone plot. The bulk of it is just being a few steps behind Adrian, and to a lesser extent, Baal. Without characters potentially established via a D1 plot, it'll pretty much be a case of faceless adventurers stumbling into the fight, and more than likely showcase the barbarian because fanboys gonna fanboy (bleh).
