Dunno how far you are but once you build a campsite it will randomly be occupied and you can have the villager there move in by talking to them.

My turnips are in a fenced off area so visitors can't barge in and steal them. Which reminds me, I need more fencing.

Oh I can plant them and then take them if the price is good ?

Can't plant them. Just place them on the floor. But since you can't construct/deconstruct fences/furniture/etc. while online just wall them off so visitors can't pluck them away.

Good to let one small batch rot as well so you can get the ant for your museum.

If you go on Nook Miles island you can have some there
Building the campsite
When you have the shop open they will make you build 3 houses for villagers

Yes. I just did the campsite, then built a house for the guy I don't want then was able to build 2 more. I can probably build more still.

You can have up to 10 and you get more than the initial 5 via the campsite. you can build new plots of land once you upgrade your town hall

After the initial 3 houses are built and the Resident Service Center is built Nook will give you the DIY for the camp site.

If you mean the first camper after you build it, you're stuck inviting that villager. You can check every day or time travel and they'll be there. waiting. forever.
