That's hardly the main reason or only reason for the uptick. The roughing the passer isn't even a new rule, they just made it a point of emphasis. I'm with everyone else that some of them are bad calls but it is a good rule. The quickest shortcut to shitty football is when starting QBs get hurt and preventing 350 lb DL from pancaking QBs is a good way to prevent that.

Also, some of the player complaints are disingenuous because presentations were made to every team in the preseason, as they do every year, going over rule changes and new points of emphasis, including this one.

I’m paraphrasing someone on Twitter but basically the NFL knows people won’t not watch a game because of questionable roughing the passer penalties but if a star QB like Brady or Rogers gets hurt and isn’t playing in the game that there absolutely some people that won’t bother watching that game.

Yep. That's pretty much it. They're frustrating calls but preferable to Brady getting his ACL torn on a low hit in week one or Rodgers getting his collarbone snapped

By the letter of the law it is. They met this week and basically stressed to the refs that if the player makes an attempt to avoid putting their full weight on the QB let it ride. I.e. putting your hands out to brace, trying to roll to the side.
