When I heard of PCIE Gen 4, I was curious which console would be first to adopt it... here we are. At least, that's what it seems like to me.

The cynic in me says game filesizes will continue to bloat because of this. Insanely fast read rates = CPU has to process it quicker = Devs using uncompressed game assets to alleviate CPU bottleneck.

I do hope Sony puts some requirements in place to keep filesizes (especially game patches) to a more sane level unlike with how god-awful it got this generation. Eg. Why are bug fixes for Days Gone 17gb? Don't resource pack or generate files in a manner that aren't easily fixable without replacing huge swaths of files.

Bloomberg was the first outlet I saw reporting it, but more than a handful of outlets are reporting Sony is having some production issues with PS5 which is now driving up the production costs due to competition of materials. Right now its pegged to be costing Sony ~$450/unit and thats apparently after nixing a mirrorless camera that was going to be included somewhere in the system's architecture.

This puts Sony in a pretty big game of chicken with Microsoft and themselves in where to price the console. For comparison, the PS4 cost Sony around $380/unit and they sold it for $399.

$599 is a disaster meme waiting to happen. $449.99 is an odd price point but it sounds the most likely to me at this rate.

I've been expecting a $499 pricetag so this news doesn't surprise me one bit. What i'm anxious to see is the damn specs on these machines. We're 10 months from supposed release and know nothing.

There's been a fair number of leaks and speculation on the internals.

The CPU between the two consoles is likely gonna be identical, but the numbers that have floated around so far have the GPU in the Xbox being quite a bit stronger.

I'll be very curious to see how things look this time around with the PS5 being the weaker of the two systems, given how much that hampered Xbone's appeal (720/900p gaming in 2013?). I picture for the most part it means fuck-all for 1080p gameplay if devs continue having 1080p mode vs. 4k setting profiles, but the 1440p+ crowd will see any difference, which Sony may bank on their eventual PS5 Pro to fill the gap in.

If it really is fully backwards compatible, they could always bundle in a PS4 game or two to make a launch $500 or $550 pricepoint hurt less.

Sony has a rich history of selling new consoles at a significant loss for the first several years out the gate.

PS5 won't cost more than $600, especially when Microsoft blinks first and prices their toaster $500 at E3.

The rumors I've heard from video game industry people is the ps5 and series x have similar power, but the playstation is edging it out a little more because it's slightly easier to develop on. We'll probably hear more on this over the next year though

There really shouldn't be any major difference developing between PlayStation/Xbox/PC at this point (not that this will stop Japanese devs from continually fucking up PC versions of games).

By most accounts/speculation the only real hardware difference between the new consoles will be core count and clock speed of the GPUs.
