    that's what a guaranteed contact is. all the new contacts are setup this way.
    gurley/cousins/etc are all guaranteed money even if they never play a single down

    The length of the contract is the primary issue. Long term contracts are, typically, mutually beneficial. Hence the disadvantage of the short-term contract (especially in the NFL) for the player.

    I've always thought guaranteed 2-3 year contacts were fair for both parties. 4 years is too long for the organization in this sport, unless it's a quarterback.

    The rookie wage scale changed a lot of this too. Teams can handle the risk of investing in their best players just fine. Prior there were teams giving kids $30m+ guaranteed that had never played a down in the NFL vs proven commodities.

    Also, teams can cut/trade a player at will, so holding out is the only power a player has.
