    Darkest Dungeon II

    • The combat system will return, but with a significant tune-up in terms of mechanics and presentation.

    • Darkest Dungeon II has a “completely different metagame structure.” It is about “enduring a grueling journey, not cleaning up your backyard.”

    • “We’re giving players a glimpse of the supernatural apocalypse twisting and distorting the world beyond the estate [of the original Darkest Dungeon].”

    • Red Hook Studios has grown to 14 people and plans to add another six or so in the coming 18 months. For comparison, most of Darkest Dungeon was developed when the studio had five people.

    • “Although there are some massive differences in structure between Darkest Dungeon and Darkest Dungeon II, the sequel is still very appropriate for an Early Access type approach.”

What ever happened to the original? I dont think I ever got around to clearing out the last couple areas when they got released back when it was still in EA. Didn't the internet decide it became the hypothetical child of Stalin and Mega-Hitler at some point?

    ?

It was highly successful. There's even been a couple of DLCs.
I think it's 75% off on Steam right now actually.

Send this one to journey elsewhere, for we have need of sterner stock.

I loved the presentation of the first one but never finished it. Perhaps I'll revisit it. My biggest problem is I remember being really bad at it.

It was overly-punishing at release, so I didn't play it too long, but it was a lot of fun to watch on twitch. I really didn't see a reason for not having a game mode that let you roll-back a dungeon run and try the whole thing again with another randomly laid out dungeon.

I personally found that trait about the game it's best feature. It's very Call of Cthulhu. Ain't no save and reload son. Accept your licks.

They did end up adding in "radiant mode", which is easy mode for the game. So anyone that found the game too hard could always try that.
... They also added a harder setting called stygian mode for insane people.

Never got around to playing the first. Now might be the time with the steam sale.

Should I pick up the DLCs or nah? And if so, which ones. (Was reading something about not doing Crimson Court on your first playthrough, which I'm only gonna do 1..)

the two major DLCs add items, classes, buildings, enemy types, a couple new systems, and 2 entirely new dungeons (base game had 5). they also add difficulty and complexity to a game that was already difficult and complex, and were clearly designed to incentivize players who had already beaten the game to run it back.

it's undoubtedly the definitive experience but as this thread shows even beating the base game is a grueling accomplishment. depends on what you're looking for.

Mastered the first one and all DLCs, and I can't wait for this one. Best indie title I've played thus far.

This was the thing. I guess they recovered afterwards, or the internet just made a bigger deal out it of then it was.

And turns out I actually did finish the vanilla game, maybe I'll try out the DLCs.
