    Laptop dying unless plugged in

As the title states my laptop keeps shutting off when it's unplugged and I play games. When it's plugged in it's totally fine. It just shuts off with no warning at all. I noticed it happens under stress in particular.

It's an older laptop (3-4ish years) but it still runs great as it was top of the line at the time.

What could be the problem with this? I'm hoping it's a battery thing and not an internal power supply thing.

is it exclusively when playing games

is the battery at the point where it can't hold a charge if it's not plugged in

after it randomly turns off, can you turn it back on and resume non-gaming usage w/ a large % remaining on the battery?

that could provide some more insight on the situation

I've only noticed it when it's under stress from gaming and unplugged (hasn't happened any other time).

I can turn it back on and it reboots perfectly normally. I get no warning of low battery; when I turn it back on the battery % is still high up.

It's possible when you are gaming it's still drawing on more power than the battery can handle so it just shuts down.

What laptop is it? like exact brand, model number, year, etc, maybe there's a defect with it or firmware/bios update for it.
Aside from that, try changing battery mode settings to stay in high performance instead of normal/power saving (or vice versa). If your laptop has dual gpu options (like intel integrated with nvidia), try looking at their power options for settings to change as well.
