Don't know the cause yet, possibly construction. The spire is gone. The roof is gone. It's still burning.

Terrible. It was a beautiful building that survived centuries. Heartbreaking.
This is awful on so many levels.
These are the things that get me emotional. So much history and beautiful craft put into this building. 12th Century. TWELFTH. The stone will survive but hopefully the interior structure doesn't take it down with it.
That is really sad. I hope they can get the fire out soon and it is able to be fixed.....but I assume that might be complicated.
Well damn.

Yeah, sounding like fire started near/during rush hour, so crews had a hell of a time getting there. Though if a tweet I saw is to be believed, at least the artwork within the building was saved.
A sad day for hunchbacks.

Why that is not a good idea;
As flames engulfed the historic Gothic structure, many wondered why airplanes were not dropping water on the inferno, as firefighters do to combat forest fires. But the cathedral's urban setting makes such a mission too dangerous: it would involve dropping perhaps 6 tons of water, an unsafe proposition in a densely populated city. The intervention could destroy the cathedral in the effort to save it.
France's civil defense agency tweeted that a large drop of water could cause the entire structure to collapse, and endanger the firefighters below.

A fire official told Agence France-Presse that the main structure is "saved and preserved.”
Yes. Flying water tankers. Fucking tool.
This is one of those things that a sane president would bring up in a meeting with advisors, where someone would say "No Mr. President, that is not feasible for xyz reasons." and the President would say "Oh, I was not aware of that. Thank you for making sure I don't look dumb to the public." But nah, not this president.
Fucking moron. And I usually hold back my thoughts on him.
This genuinely made me sad and tear up. My wife and I just looked through all our honeymoon pictures there and of the Mass we attended there. The history, the artifacts, all gone. Sorry to get religious but some of Christianity's most important pieces are there. Heartbreaking to say the least.
Looks like they were able to save some of the most important art and artifacts. Such a relief. Bell towers were saved. It will be rebuilt.
Oh my goodness. This is so horrible.
Kinda want to pop back in Assassin’s Creed Unity and go check it out again. Actually I wonder now if all those assets in the game would be helpful in reconstructing what was damaged.
There's also all the reference art and photos the Disney team must have taken to do the movie. But I'm sure there are thousands of recent photos as well.
This news made me legitimately sad and tear up, history being lost always hits hard because it's irreplaceable. I mean yeah they can rebuild it but it still won't be exactly the same.
This is sad as hell to hear. So much history, that cathedral was fucking beautiful and now so many people will never get to experience it at its prime. This is why you never take shit for granted and explore the world if you can.
Seemed like the appropriate place to post this. Saw this a few months ago. Feels more poignant now. These dudes went ham.
