An industrial toxic dumping site has been re-discovered 10 miles off of the coast of Los Angeles. Roughly ~500k barrels of DDT were found there.

Few people were even aware of the dumping ground until researchers led by David Valentine, a professor of microbiology and geochemistry at the University of California Santa Barbara, used submersibles to locate the 3,000-foot-deep site between Long Beach and Catalina Island.

Valentine was first tipped off to the potential existence of the dumping ground when he dug up a 1985 report by a team of scientists at the California Regional Water Quality Control Board that described the waste disposal practices of chemical companies from the 1940s to 1970s.

The discovery inspired Valentine and his colleagues to search for this long-overlooked dumping ground. He finally got the opportunity to follow up on his suspicions while leading oceanographic cruises in the area in 2011 and 2013. His team sent autonomous vehicles to look for the site in spare moments between their other research objectives.

The submersibles revealed barrels of toxic waste scattered across the seafloor, some of which appeared to be slashed open, possibly to help them sink. Valentine and his colleagues described the dumping practice as “inherently sloppy, with the contents readily breaching containment and leading to regional scale contamination,” in a 2019 study that summarized their findings.

The insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was widely used in the 20th century, but was banned in the United States in 1972 due to its immense negative effects on public health and the environment.
The barrels originate from the Montrose Chemical Corporation of California who in 2000 settled a lawsuit with the state for having another dumping site two miles off of the coast of Los Angeles.

30 pounds is enough to destroy a truck

    164 pounds for a barn

So I guess 80 pounds is the likely amount needed to announce "IT'S A BOY"

On Friday, the Biden administration shut the plant down, citing an “imminent” threat to people’s health after several recent accidents contaminated St. Croix’s drinking water and left hundreds of people sick. In its 45-page order, the agency described the pollution’s impact in the words of its own employees who had come to stop it.

“The odor I briefly encountered was overwhelming and nauseating,” recounted another EPA staffer, who was coordinating the agency’s response on the island and inhaled gasoline-like fumes May 6. “I normally am suited up with respiratory protection and other [personal protective equipment] prior to being exposed to something like this.”

n a statement, EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the agency took the extraordinary step after Limetree Bay showered oil on local residents twice, spewed sulfuric gases into the surrounding area and released hydrocarbons into the air.

A containership that has been on fire for twelve days, due to a chemical leak, has begun to sink into the Indian Ocean just off of the coast of Sri Lanka.

The Singapore-registered X-Press Pearl has been on fire for almost two weeks.

Some hundreds of tonnes of engine oil could leak into the sea if the ship sinks, with devastating impact on marine life.

The Sri Lankan and Indian navies had worked jointly over the past days in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent the ship from breaking up and sinking.

The coastal stretch near the city of Negombo - home to some of the country's most pristine beaches - has already seen oil and debris pollution for days.

X-Press Shipping - the Singapore based company which owns the vessel - confirmed the crew had been aware of the leak, but say they were denied permission by both Qatar and India to leave the ship there before the fire broke out.

The fact that Sri Lanka allowed the vessel to enter the country's waters after it was rejected by two other nations has led to widespread public anger.
The ship was carrying 1486 containers with 25 tons of nitric acid amongst other unnamed chemicals and cosmetics.

    Spoiler: show

I approve of this, honestly. Some aliens are going to have a field day shaking their heads at our hubris. To be so intelligent and to see the warning signs so far in advance, yet do NOTHING because of tribalism and corporate worshiping... its like standing on the tracks and watching the train speed toward you, but you can't move.
