The Environmental Working Group said PFAS, an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have oozed into the Great Lakes and pose a risk to people who eat fish tainted with the chemicals.

Pentagon documents show at least 385 military installations nationwide are polluted with PFAS, mostly from firefighting foam used widely in training exercises, the group said.

A review of department records showed PFAS has been detected at levels up to 213,000 parts per trillion at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Michigan, which closed in 1993, the Environmental Working Group said.

State officials discovered the contamination in 2010.

Combined levels of PFOA and PFOS, two of the most commonly used chemicals in the group, reached as high as 1.3 million ppt at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station in Niagara County, New York.

Other readings included 135,000 ppt of the compound PFHxS at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee; 82,000 ppt of PFOA and PFOS at Alpena County Regional Airport in Michigan; 17,000 ppt of PFOS at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mount Clemens, Michigan; and 5,400 ppt of PFHxS at Duluth International Airport in Minnesota.

The compounds are called “forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment or the human body and can accumulate over time. They have been linked to a variety of health problems including cancer, liver damage and decreased fertility.

There is a massive oil spill two miles south of Port Fourchon, LA. There are three breached pipelines and Hurricane Ida is being blamed as the cause. Talos Energy, who has owned drilling permits in the area, is claiming no responsibility, but is paying for the cleanup anyways.

Talos Energy, the Houston-based company currently paying for the cleanup, said in a statement issued Sunday evening that the busted pipeline does not belong to them.

The company said it is working with the U.S. Coast Guard and other state and federal agencies to coordinate the response and identify the owner of the ruptured pipeline.

Two additional 4-inch pipelines were also identified in the area that are open and apparently abandoned. The company’s statement did not make clear if oil was leaking from the two smaller pipelines, but satellite images reviewed by the Associated Press on Saturday appeared to show at least three different slicks in the same area, the largest drifting more than a dozen miles eastward along the Gulf coast.

The AP first reported Wednesday that aerial photos showed a miles-long brown and black oil slick spreading about 2 miles south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana. The broken pipe is in relatively shallow water, at about 34 feet of depth.

Talos said the rate of oil appearing on the surface had slowed dramatically in the last 48 hours and no new heavy black crude had been seen in the last day.
Also, petroleum from a refinery outside of New Orleans is leaking into the Mississippi River.

The AP also first reported Wednesday on images that showed extensive flooding and what appeared to be petroleum in the water at the sprawling Phillips 66 Alliance Refinery located along the Mississippi River south of New Orleans.

he Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality said a state assessment team sent to the Alliance Refinery observed a spill of heavy oil being addressed with booms and absorbent pads. A levee meant to protect the plant had breached, allowing floodwaters to flow in during the storm and then back out as the surge receded.

State environmental officials said there was also no estimate yet available for how much oil might have spilled from the Phillips 66 refinery.

I mean, it's pretty common for huge corps to spend money on things they are not guilty of right? Pretty sure that sounds correct when it comes to Capitalism.

New oil spill reported in Southern California, 13 square miles. Affects primarily Huntington Beach & Newport Beach.

More than 120,000 gallons of oil that spilled into the Pacific Ocean has reached the Southern California coastline, closing parts of the beach as officials warn residents to stay away from the slick.

Federal, state and local agencies are racing to determine the cause of the spill, which is at least 13 square miles in size, and mitigate its impacts.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said the spill came from the oil rig Platform Elly, which Beta operates about 8.6 miles from land. Amplify Energy, Beta's parent company, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Incident may have happened a year ago after a container ship's anchor(s) was dragged over the pipeline.

It remains unknown when the slender, 13-inch crack began leaking oil, and investigators will review a year of data on ship movements near the area of the break. No ships have been identified as suspects at this point.

The scene is outside the Long Beach-Los Angeles port complex that is the largest in the country and handles some 4,000 vessels a year. Many of them are from overseas and that could complicate the process of boarding ships of interest in the investigation to get information.

The disclosure that the damage to the pipe could have occurred so long ago dramatically reshaped what was known about the leak that sent tens of thousands of gallons of crude into the Pacific. A search that initially appeared to focus on the hunt for one vessel now could send investigators to ports around the country to inspect many ships.

It now appears many factors played a role in the pipe’s failure – possible repeated anchor strikes, stresses from being dragged along the seafloor and the corrosive forces of seawater.

A fertilizer plant in Winston-Salem, NC caught fire overnight and over 6k people had to be evacuated from the surrounding area.

The fire was reported before 7 p.m. at the Winston Weaver Co. fertilizer plant at 4440 Cherry St. No injuries have been reported from the fire, but officials are worried chemicals at the plant could cause an explosion.

Video posted by the City of Winston-Salem showed towering flames and heavy smoke, and people living within a 1-mile radius of the plant were asked to evacuate as the fire reached a rail car holding ammonium nitrate.

On Tuesday, a hazardous materials expert at the scene said the impact of burning ammonium nitrate would be "more of an irritant" to the body, or something that could cause a rash, as opposed to causing severe illness or death.

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, no one – including firefighters – was inside the 1-mile radius for their own safety, but officials said air monitoring outside the perimeter revealed 65 parts per million of the chemicals. To cross the threshold into immediate danger or death, air monitoring would need to reveal 100 parts per million, officials said.

49 dead and over 100 injured at a cargo container depot in Bangladesh. A fire ignited containers holding various chemicals.

At least nine firefighters were among the dead, according to Brig. Gen. Main Uddin, director general of the Bangladesh fire service and civil defense. More than 10 others were being treated for burns, he added.

Multiple rounds of explosions occurred after the initial blast as the fire continued to spread, Uddin said. Explosives experts from Bangladesh’s military have been called in to assist the firefighters. The explosions shattered the windows of nearby buildings and were felt as far as 4 kilometers (2 1/2 miles) away, officials and local media reports said.

11 dead and 250 injured after a chlorine leak at the Red Sea port of Aqaba, Jordan.

The deputy director of Aqaba's port told AlMamlaka TV that an "iron rope" carrying the container "broke" while it was being loaded on to a vessel.

The container was filled with between 25 and 30 tons of chlorine and was being exported to Djibouti.
There is a 10 mile radius evacuation zone around the port.
